Payton, I totally understand your fears. What you girls have been through was very traumatic and you both obviously love your babies dearly and don't want to see anything happen to them. True, that only you can make this decision and you have to be willing to live with whatever the results are, but you also need to understand that those things are rare and the chances of something like that happening to both you and your friend are pretty slim.
I know we have all discussed Irena's age and size etc. but what about this buck? is he the only possibility you have of breeding her to an ND? Is there any possibility that you could use a buck with a history of babies born in the 3 pound range. I still don't think your chances are better using the other buck you mentioned though. I think that was a fainting goat, right? I am not so sure that that might not be even worse. Payton, was your friend giving her doe a lot of grain when she was pregnant. Everyone keeps saying that that will make the babies a lot bigger. I have just had my first ND kid born, so I don't have the experience to compare about the grain. The fact is that if the baby was twisted in a bad position there is no way of knowing if the same thing may have happened even if the baby had been smaller. It could have still happened the same way!
Payton, I have just been all through your blog and I am so impressed with you. You are quite an accomplished young lady and an asset to the homeschool reputation. You hang in there girl, I know mom must be so proud that I imagine she will be happy to let you have another doe soon. I am a little confused about your plan to breed to a fainter. I don't understand why you feel that is safer. It would be great if you could just use a ND and then maybe you would have a doe you could keep. A first freshener would not be to likely to have 4 babies and the risk are higher with a single baby because they get bigger. That is usually the worse problem. When mom gets that goat milk she will probably won't some goats of her own. I just wanted to let you know how super I think you are. Best to you sweety!
