A Year (and a half) in Review

Bought the kids July 2015. Bred Mira January, first travel and goat-sitters March, babies June, learned how to milk, sold babies August, started playing with chevre and cheddar, built cheese press, rigged a sort of cheese cave, expanded goat yard, added more play structures for the goats...

...and I keep putting off the eternal question from Willow, "Can I keep another doe next year?" I keep waiting for the proverbial bloom to fall. I waited to see if she'd get tired of the constant…

I'm announcing my new (still being edited and added to, but published) farm website complete with blog! I wanted to put the blog link here, since it's about my recent (and first) kidding experience. Emails and messages have started coming in about people wanting to "milk share" with their kids now that they are two weeks old. Unless your doe had a single, that's a terrible idea, and although your kids might survive, they won't thrive. Here are all the details on when you can start separating kids overnight.

"Sounds like they are up to date on the copper and you shouldn't need to give more for a few months. "

"This is totally normal, and it's why people usually buy second or third-cut alfalfa. The stems in the first cutting are bigger and less palatable. Your hay is a beautiful green, but it does look like the stems are pretty big. A common complaint about goats is that they waste hay. One of the great things about having cows is that we'd take the leftover hay from the goats and give it to the cows, and they'd eat it up, so nothing ever went to waste.
It is not just the stems that are better for…"

"I have started feeding all alfalfa hay to the lactating does, and am starting to increase the amount of feed pellets, but didn't want to do that too fast. I think the change in diet might already be helping the moms. I hate to say it, but I guess I've been starving the moms without meaning to. It seems like so many sources out there are so anti-grain, that it scares and confuses a newbie like me as to how much, if any grain to feed. Your recommendation though is in line with the feeding guide…"

If you're wondering why you hear so many different answers to this question, it's because it depends! In this video, I am only talking about ADULT WETHERS — not kids — because the answer for kids is yes, young wethers should have alfalfa. But it gets complicated when you're talking about adults, which is why I created this video.

I've answered this question so many times already this spring that I realized I'm overdue on creating a video to answer the question of whether you can leave kids with mom or if you have to separate them to bottlefeed if they are not gaining enough weight.

"The does definitely eat the loose minerals when they are fresh, and the bucklings are going crazy for them right now. The bucks and the wethers, however, seem to rarely touch them. My black goats had started getting "rusty" on their legs, my brown goats were turning red-brown, that fur was also feeling stiff and rough, their tail fur was getting thin and fish tail-like, and they were all loosing hair on the bridge of their noses (may or may not be related). When this started happening last…"

"Purina is a good mineral so you shouldn't have any problems if you're using it. It also has a very high level of copper. I'd suggest only putting out a cup at a time -- or whatever they can finish in a few days. You don't want it to get wet because the selenium will leach out. Also, don't buy more than one bag at a time. They do get old.
If calcium is the only mineral in your water, that won't cause copper deficiency. If your water is stinky (sulfur) or turns your sinks orange (iron), those…"

"Sorry, forgot to add that I use Purina loose goat minerals. Its really humid here often, and we just recently finished the barn enough to get the moms in there, so it can be a real challenge to keep minerals out for them before they get rain dripping on them, or get gross from the humiditiy. To make matters worse, I'm pretty sure we have a secondary copper deficiency due at least to high calcium in our well water. We haven't had it tested yet for things like that, but we get lots of white…"
