Introduction

Hi all! My name is Tammy Birrer and I live in beautiful Leona Valley, Ca. My family has a small 3 acre farm/ranch in which we raise lots of different animals. I am a 4-H leader for Rabbit and a small livestock leader for Grange. We enjoy showing market animals at the Antelope Valley Fair. I just started in Nigerians, although, we are not new to goats in general. We raised Alpines for my son's 4H project for 5 years. My thing is miniature anything! Love it! I have a few miniature horses and mini-lop show rabbits as well. My goals are to breed quality Nigerians and get in to showing them in the future. So I really want to learn as much as I can about them. I will post pictures later as I learn to do this forum stuff. I'll probably need my kids help, lol.

  • Hi Deborah,
I am north west of Los Angeles in the High Desert area. About 1 hour away. We have winter temps from 24 to 45 degrees at night. Right now at 9:45pm it is currently 44 degrees. Our high today was about 58. I will have to look up Shetland Sheep. Haven't heard of those yet. Dexter cattle , I have seen in my miniature horse magazines. I don't know anyone that has any near me. Do they do well in the heat? We do get very hot in the summer. High can be around 110 at times.
Freezing temps sure make it hard to keep up with the watering. I don't have heated waterers because we don't have electricity back where the pens are. So I have to wait till the hoses thaw out in order to fill the waters. We have a few steers for 4H, 4 geldings, 3 mares (2 are mini), chickens and a fallow deer. Soon we will get our other market animals for fair, pigs, goat, and lamb. Thanks for inviting me to the website.

Welcome to the group! I'm with you -- I love all the smaller livestock. In addition to Nigerians, we have Shetland sheep (same size as NDs) and Dexter cattle, which are only waist high.

Which part of California are you in? Do you have nice weather year-round? We're in Illinois and are currently excited about the heat wave that brought our temperatures up into double digits! I think it might have hit 20 today. We've been dealing with below zero for the last couple weeks.
