Horn Regrowth

I have a male goat that had his horns burnt by a vet at 1 week old and will be 5 weeks old on Saturday.  I noticed today that one of his horns looks like it is growing back but the horn almost looks pink.  The original burn scab has not fallen off, it is on the top of the pink looking growth.  I am thinking I need to reburn but was concerned with the pink look.

  • Do you have any wonder dust? I've used that to stop the bleeding when they get crazy head butting and bust those scurs off. It works! My bucks scurs are white.

My vet is an hour away but she will be coming back in a few weeks.  I don't believe it is a scur.  The scab now fell off and I had trouble stopping the bleeding.  It looked like there was a horn regrowing but it was not black.  I ended up using the disbudding iron and try stopping the bleeding.  I finally got it to stop and the area had dried blood on it.  He keeps head butting with his brothers (cell mates).  I'm going to leave it for the vet to look at when she comes back to show me how to de-buck (wether) my males.  Thanks!

  • Do you mean you are seeing a scur? Scurs are usually black, but they're horn material. It can be a real challenge trying to describe this in writing. Will the vet take a look at it for you since he did the original disbudding?

  • it does not look like an infection it just looks like the horn bud is clear pinkish.  The horn bud looks like it started growing again because it is not flat like the other side.

  • does it look like an infection?  I know it can sometimes happen that the burn site gets  a bit infected and requires some antibiotic.  I would check with the vet.

  • I'm not sure what you mean about something pink if the scab hasn't fallen off. When the scab falls off, there is pink skin underneath, but I can't think of anything else pink. If the vet did the original disbudding, he should be willing to reburn if it wasn't complete, but that's just my opinion.
