Feeding a doe in milk

Hi,

I have a question about the grain you all use for when you have a doe in milk. I have always used a goat ration #16 percent protein.  I have friends that say you shouldn't use a prepared feed but use whole grains, such as Barley, and they add alfalfa pellets to that.  The thought is that the prepared feed has ingredients that aren't good for rumenents.  Any thoughts?

  • "Not good" is very subjective. Did they give you any details? Some people don't like commercial goat grains because they're made with GMO ingredients unless you can find one that's organic. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any in my area. Organic goat feed is really hard to find.

I can tell you that simply mixing together grains will not provide all the minerals goats need. We tried mixing our own grains many years ago, and it did not turn out well. Historically goats did not live in the continental US. We don't have what they need to thrive. That's why we have to supplement their diet with minerals and feeds that have added minerals.

I always say that if it's not broke, don't fix it. If your goats are doing well, keep doing what you're doing.
