Their horns are still growing and are a few inches long now. Goats where made to have horns so I don't believe in removing their horns. But I was wondering if there was a way to try and train the horns to grow straight back and not to curve out to the sides as much. To make them more safe.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or ever tried to do this and if it worked.

Thank you.

Scammer deleted from sitehttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/scammer-deleted-from-site2021-01-19T15:49:51.000Z2021-01-19T15:49:51.000ZDeborah Niemann-Boehlehttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/DeborahNiemannBoehle

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I've deleted Tracy Meltone from the site. She's the one who had two very odd posts -- one about fostering goats and one about electronic ID -- but basically they were sales posts, and she was linking to her website.

When I went to her website, I found nothing about their individual goats, only sale ads, as well as a page that talked about all of their national show wins. When I cut and pasted some of the verbiage, I found that they had copied it from Redwood Hills, which is one of the top Alpine herds in the US.

They clearly don't know what they are doing because all of the photos on their page are of ND newborns. When I did reverse google searches on the photos, I found that they had copied them from other breeders' websites or Instagram.

And oh, yeah, another fun thing on their website -- they talked about needing at least two hours to arrange shipping for your goat!!! LOL!!! Clearly they have NEVER shipped a goat in their lives.

I hope that none of you were fooled by them.

Can you keep a goat inside your house?https://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/can-you-keep-a-goat-inside-your-house2021-01-15T14:05:48.000Z2021-01-15T14:05:48.000ZJane Rogershttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/JaneRogers

Is it ok if you own a indoor goat?

RIP Pokeyhttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/rip-pokey2017-01-02T00:55:41.000Z2017-01-02T00:55:41.000ZJulieanne Cookhttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/JulieanneCook

Pokey the wether goat, beloved by all. 2/14 - 1/17

I suspect some of the eggs may be from other hens who laid in her nest once she was broody. She is still sitting and I am concerned for the 2 live chicks. They are sitting under her, shouldn't they be up scratching and eating, and her along with them? I took 4 eggs from her and tried to candle them but I couldn't see anything. I cracked them and 2 were rotten and 2 had small dead chicks in them. Any advice on how to proceed? Should I wait and let her sit, or will that jepordise the 2 live ones?
My Doe Joy freshened May 20th with two bucklings. Unfortunately one of the babies died due to a disbudding mishap at 4 days old (I think the guy helping me do it burned him for too long and caused his brain to swell, but that's another story), so since she's only had one baby nursing I've been milking her twice a day without separating the baby. Luckily the baby nurses on both sides so I haven't had any lop-sided udder issues.

She's a horror to milk. I tried staying peaceful and keeping my hand on her udder until she calms down, which just didn't happen. I could only handle so much of her kicking me, and kicking over the milk bucket and making a huge mess. I tried holding up one of her back legs, but she would just kick me with the other back leg and balance on her front legs. I finally resorted to the hobble. I would try to milk her until she kicked for the first time, and then I would hobble her and leave her hobbled until I was finished milking, then take it off and pet/brush her for a few minutes with my hand on her udder to try and end the session on a positive note. She would not touch her grain if my hands were anywhere near her udder.

Yesterday, after 2 solid weeks of struggling at both daily milkings, she let me milk her without kicking or sticking her stupid foot in the milk bucket!!! I was so excited I could hardly stand it. FINALLY some progress. This morning we had another successful milking session and I feel so rejuvenated. I was beginning to wonder who was going to break first.

I separated the remaining baby for the first time last night for 6 hours and was a little disappointed with the 9 oz I got from her, but I'm separating him again tonight for 10 hours to see how much I can get. He's a chunky little thing so I'm not too worried about taking the milk at this point.

On another happy note we are going to pick up our first two registered doelings tomorrow!! My husband got them for me as an anniversary present! He definitely wins husband of the year award in my book :D

Do not buy this book!https://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/do-not-buy-book2015-05-09T05:26:36.000Z2015-05-09T05:26:36.000ZGlenna Rosehttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/GlennaRose

This book was discussed on one of the facebook groups. Absolutely, do not buy it or encourage anyone else to buy it! It is totally inaccurate, some of the things on one page only: Combs are vulnerable to frost. Weight is 50-175 lbs. Babies: one or twins. At the end of that page it says those are just a few characteristics unique to Nigerian Dwarf goats - discussed in detail in previous chapters!

It is unbelievable this is even on the market!!!

With the pain, the rest and recovery, I was basically out of action today, or anything I did was one handed. But it got me thinking about this homestead life – we love our homemade bread, goats milk, chickens eggs etc, but having those involves activities that require my health and strength. If I am incapacitated, as I was today, I cannot make and knead homemade bread, and as we are essentially off grid, there are no frozen loaves to pull out of the freezer. Or, having separated the kid from the mother goat overnight, but then injuring my left hand this morning, I had to get a friend to help me with milking – her first quick milking lesson! And on the list goes, food, animals, everything is affected. So, I am wondering, what tips do you have for ensuring life goes on at the homestead if you are out of action? And secondly, what basic ready made foods (homemade) can people suggest to keep on hand for emergencies?

I don't want to come off as a know-it-all because I am still learning so much myself and have only owned goats since August of 2014.

I always recommend Raising Goats Naturally when talking to people and tell them about this site in the hopes that they will do further research and take care of their goats properly, but I get so frustrated because some of them just flatly refuse to continue researching! I guess it's hard for me to understand that because I crave new information and love reading through all the posts on this site whenever I have time.

My distress is coming mainly from one person I have recently come into contact with (though there have been several that make me cringe with their practices). One young lady is SO invasive with her goats. She says she's been breeding NDs for 4 years now, but she doesn't feed her pregnant/lactating does any alfalfa, and she scoffed when I suggested it. Her goats get all-stock sweet feed and costal hay and that's all. She is constantly having issues with her does supposedly "reabsorbing" their babies while pregnant and does routine internal checks on her pregnant does who are still weeks away from kidding!! It makes me very upset because I care about the animals so I am full of guilt when I remain silent, but I also don't want to be "that person" who is constantly throwing in my opinion when I am so new to the goat game.

When one of her does recently gave birth she said that the babies "weren't moving into the birth canal fast enough" and "she just knew something was wrong" so she went in and pulled the babies out by hand! I know people have different views and techniques when it comes to their animals, but this just seems absurd! I am so distressed. Normally I would just break off communications with this type of person but being in the same rural community makes that difficult.

How would you ladies handle a situation like this? My love for goats makes me want to do something, but there isn't much I can do and I guess I just needed to talk to some people who understand.

Jennifer Pentlandhttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/jennifer-pentland2015-02-18T01:53:49.000Z2015-02-18T01:53:49.000ZJulieanne Cookhttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/JulieanneCook

Jenny Pentland is Roseanne Barr's daughter.
I wanted to let you know that I'm going to start doing homesteading webinars! People have been asking me to do them for years, and I finally decided that I'm just going to do it! You all know that I'm passionate about sustainable living -- and especially goats. I've spent a lot of time thinking about how I can get this information out to more people, and for 2015 I've decided to severely restrict my travel schedule and spend my time on writing and webinars. Although I might reach a few hundred people when I speak at a conference, it usually means that I've taken several days away from the farm, which means that I can't do it very often. Also, you might not be able to travel to a conference, especially if you already have a homestead with animals to care for. By doing webinars, I'm hoping to be able to reach more people so that you will have the information you need to reach your homesteading goals.

The first webinar will be 8 p.m. Monday, February 2, and I'll be doing my Homesteading 101 talk, which I've done in many different parts of the U.S. And because I love this group so much, I'm offering you a discount. The regular price of the webinar is $19, but if you use the discount code "GoatFriends," you will get a $5 discount. (Be sure to not put a space between the two words, and capitalize the G and F.)

Click here for all of the details and for the link to register. There is also a link on that page where you can participate in a survey on what topics you would like to have covered in future webinars.

As always, if you have ideas on how I can help you get the information you need to succeed on your homestead, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm starting the webinars because people asked for them.

ND goats in Chicagolandhttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/nd-goats-in-chicagoland2015-01-14T03:58:31.000Z2015-01-14T03:58:31.000ZViktorija Baleckaitishttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/ViktorijaBaleckaitis

Hello all!

I thought I'd share a quick bit of what's going on here, and keeping me away from the computer and this group. Suffice it to say, I MISS YOU ALL!

In August my sister in law was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Within two days she was on chemo, and by the day after my 41st birthday, August 21st, I was the full time caretaker of her 4 year old daughter and 9 month old twins. They joined my four children, so now I'm a homeschooling mom/caretaker of 7 children.

It has been a real ride, for sure. I wish I had more time to share what amazing things have happened that have kept me going, hoping and trusting in God through this whole thing...like the Club Wagon van that was given to us to haul a family of 9 aroiund in, and all the meals that people have provided. I love my community!

Even with all the lovely people who have stepped in to share this burden, it has been a big adjustment. There have been times I've thought I should really re-home my herd, because I don't have the time or the heart for them sometimes. However, something always happens that gets me through and keeps me going.

I just wanted to share what's been going on, and ask you all to keep my family and my SIL and her family in prayer. One day, I'll be back asking and maybe answering a few questions. For now, I'll be checking in to read a thing or two on here when I can.

I was thinking about Ouessants (sheep) as they are the size of NDs but didn't want to deal with mineral issues. So 2 angora goats will satisfy my interest in fiber. However, like Debra- I read about Angora lack of vigor and hardiness- until I discovered the Navajo Angora. The original angoras. Hardy, excellent mothers, clean faces and legs and lovely fleece.
Horns- my only big issue but since these versions of angoras have horns that curve tightly back along the head more or less- I may become comfortable.
If you search for Navajo angora- you will see some pics. They sort of look like small dainty Navajo Churro sheep- another primitive breed like the shetlands.
My favorite pics are attached:
image.jpg

Holiday shopping ideas for goat lovers!https://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/holiday-shopping-ideas-for-goat-lovers2014-12-10T01:01:44.000Z2014-12-10T01:01:44.000ZDeborah Niemann-Boehlehttps://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/members/DeborahNiemannBoehle

Here are a few gift ideas for the goat lovers in your life!
