A Year (and a half) in Review

Bought the kids July 2015. Bred Mira January, first travel and goat-sitters March, babies June, learned how to milk, sold babies August, started playing with chevre and cheddar, built cheese press, rigged a sort of cheese cave, expanded goat yard, added more play structures for the goats...

...and I keep putting off the eternal question from Willow, "Can I keep another doe next year?" I keep waiting for the proverbial bloom to fall. I waited to see if she'd get tired of the constant…

I'm announcing my new (still being edited and added to, but published) farm website complete with blog! I wanted to put the blog link here, since it's about my recent (and first) kidding experience. A lot of people think that coccidiosis is inevitable in kids and that starting them on a medicated feed or other coccidiostat when they are three weeks old is mandatory. I thought that at one time, but we quit doing that about ten years ago, and we have had only two cases of coccidiosis since then — and we've had about 400 kids since then. Want to know how we have less than 1% of our kids getting coccidiosis? That's what I'm talking about in this livestream.

"Thanks, Tammy. I'll give the ProBios a try, as well as bottle feeding some more if possible, and later increase the triplet moms' grain."

"Hi Rebecca
You may still want to consider bottles for the kids that are really  struggling to keep up with weight gain. Clumpy poop is likely a combination of the increased water intake along with the changes in diet. I would consider adding in a good probiotic. I really like the powdered ProBios. Once poop gets normal again (should only take a few days) I would continue to increase the amount of grain moms with triplets are getting and monitor the moms with twins. By the time a kid weighs 10#,…"

If you've been looking for a smaller breed of goat that's parasite resistant, has excellent mothering skills, and comes in a variety of colors, the Arapawa goat from New Zealand might be a good fit, especially if you are interested in conserving rare breeds.
In this episode, we are joined by Emily Nyman, Arapawa Goat Breeders Association President and Livestock Coordinator at Conner Prairie in Indiana, a living history farm museum that has a herd of…

" I wanted to give an update on these mom's and babies...its been a while! It seems like any time I have goat realated issues and get advice, we have some kind of family event/ emergency and the past couple weeks have been no exception.
With everything going on, I didn't get the kids (the ones that weren't gaining as much) separated and exclusively bottle fed. And, yes, like you said supplementing here and there just wasn't working. It seemed like only the kids who were already gaining OK would…"

Emails and messages have started coming in about people wanting to "milk share" with their kids now that they are two weeks old. Unless your doe had a single, that's a terrible idea, and although your kids might survive, they won't thrive. Here are all the details on when you can start separating kids overnight.
