A Year (and a half) in Review

Bought the kids July 2015. Bred Mira January, first travel and goat-sitters March, babies June, learned how to milk, sold babies August, started playing with chevre and cheddar, built cheese press, rigged a sort of cheese cave, expanded goat yard, added more play structures for the goats...

...and I keep putting off the eternal question from Willow, "Can I keep another doe next year?" I keep waiting for the proverbial bloom to fall. I waited to see if she'd get tired of the constant…

I have two separate questions. First, I am taking care of a neighbor's goat that escapes their pasture so was locked in a stall 24/7, he is now living in my pasture with my 2 goats and 2 horses. He is a loner but they get along fine. My question is, he has scurs. He's an older goat, several years old at least. One of his scurs is loose and wiggly (pictured). He plays and headbutts with my other goat who is much smaller but horned. Is this a problem? Will the scur break off and if so, will it…

It depends! There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, and I'm explaining which goats need it and which do not and why. For more information on this topic, check out my blog post: https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goats-need-baking-soda/

If you have well water, it can negatively affect your goats' health by causing mineral deficiencies. But before you call to have someone test your water, watch this video to learn which minerals cause problems and how YOU can figure it out without spending money on a test. I recently received an application from a potential goat buyer who is already keeping a couple of pet goats in a dog crate! So, I'm discussing how goats differ from dogs (like four stomaches!) and need different housing, medication, and care.

The problem with much of the information shared online about giving Tums to goats is that it is not specific about dosage, when to give it, how often, why to give it, when you should expect to see results, and what to do if a goat doesn't respond. If you don't give enough to a goat with true hypocalcemia, they will die. If you continue giving it to a goat long term, they can wind up zinc deficient. This is way more complicated than just telling someone to give their goat a couple of Tums. For…

When someone moves to a new farm and goats start dying, they are usually surprised, especially if they've been raising goats for a long time. They contact me and say, "I haven't changed anything, so why are they dying?" The problem is that a new farm often means you need new management because what works on one farm doesn't always work on another one.

Spent brewers grain and distillers grain are popular feed for cattle, but are less commonly used to feed goats. We’ve used brew grain to feed our pigs and chickens for about ten years, but have shied away from feeding it to our goats because it doesn’t come with a guaranteed nutritional analysis or even an ingredient list.
In this episode, Dr. VanSaun discusses the nutrients we know are in brewer’s and distiller’s grains and what may or…

People are often surprised to hear that we raise our ND goats for meat sometimes because they assume they aren't big enough to be worth the time or money to process. Here's how we do it!

A couple of Plume’s kids were born with contracted tendons in their hocks and pasterns. Here is what that looks like. Although you will hear people talking about doing all sorts of things to try to fix this, the reality is that it usually works itself out with no additional intervention — and in their case, it did! They were both walking normally the next day.

"Just to update this in case anyone cares... No babies were made between my goats. He still mounts her periodically, especially when they are a little stressed (I recently added a new wether to the herd and he kept mounting her, she was ticked). And they are not much bigger than they were at 8 months, around 40-45 pounds at over a year old!"
