I have a buckling who is a week old. We lost his sister (that's another post) so he is alone. We had a rough start with momma (FF) not wanting him...was 5 hours before he nursed much...but now he is…Continue

"Taylor! I live in Lynden WA and could not find a source for Sweet Lix Meat Maker. Where did you find it? I’m having similar issues with one of my wethers and need to supplement copper. Will be following this discussion. — Leslie"

"I’ve been avoiding de-wormers. I did fecals to check for worms and my goats were clear. I’ve only used the dewormer/parasiticide for the mites. I did check the wethers ears tonight and the sores are mostly gone. Smooth ears again! What…"

"It's not really a good idea to use injectable dewormers with goats because it stays in their system for a couple of months at a really low level, so that all of the worms in their gut are being exposed to a low level of dewormer, which is…"

"Hair loss around the eyes and on the bridge of the nose are often caused by copper deficiency. Crusty sores on his ears could be caused by something completely different.  When you say the buck improved but then flared up again, do you mean all…"

Symptoms of mites

My 9 month old wether has lost hair around his eyes and the bridge of his nose. He also has crusty sores on his ears and maybe a few around his nose. Last year, my older wether had the same symptoms and eventually had scaly skin on his tail and hair loss. He didn’t have the ear sores. I treated him with injectable ivermectin (1cc/25lbs) — 3 treatments 10 days between them. This year I tried the same for the 9 month old — but it hasn’t cleared it up. It improved but then it flared up again. It…See More

"BTW I grew up on a dairy farm and am familiar with cows. And dairy cows have their food and environment highly managed. I like that goats don't require nearly as much, and frankly, are so much more entertaining!! (And the poop! So easy to deal…"

"Since you posted about being concerned about your goats staying warm, housing and bedding are the most important things. Your barn looks very nice. Although our goats did fine the first couple of years when we were using shavings, straw is warmer.…"

"Ok! Thanks for the explanation! It makes sense to me now. I won't be milking the doe so she can just keep making what the baby needs. When I first had goats, I was over-feeding them -- killing them with kindness as they say -- so I am a little…"
