Are there any risks or drawbacks to breeding my Nigerian does to a buck from another breed? I have some family members who are interested in a few goats for the freezer and had the thought that a…Continue

Hello everyone. My wife and I are brand new goat owners having purchased three Nigerian Dwarfs does two weeks ago from a homesteader in Vermont. Two of the does are older and freshened in June, the…Continue

"I'm so glad she's better, Lee! That same thing happened to one of my does last summer. She had a singleton, 4.25 lbs, and she was a first freshener. The vet came out and checked her inside and out, and gave her calcium, Vitamin B, etc.,…"

"Im guessing upset stomach is all it was. She is back to normal this morning. The birth was quick and easy and the placenta was passed soon after. No assistance was needed with the birth. Her udder appears to be normal. I'll pick up a…"

"Also, how is her udder? Is it hot and hard? Mastitis could also make a doe very sick at this point."

"Ditto on what Margaret said -- and does she have a temperature? If she has a retained placenta or kid, she probably has an infection and will have an elevated temp. If her temp is below normal, she could have milk fever, which is caused by…"

Sluggish/loss of appetite after kidding

One of my does gave birth to one very large girl on Sunday. The kid is nursing very well and is actively playing  with her cousins who were born Monday. But mom has started to get sluggish and seems to have lost her appetite. She wont get on the milking stand to eat her grain at all and she only picks at her hay. Raisins are all that she will eat with enthusiasm. Any ideas as to what might cause this and suggestions for making her feel better? She has access to plenty of free choice minerals. My…See More

Cheryl K. Smith replied to Lee Pilkovsky's discussion cross breeding
"Biggest risk is having oversize kids and birthing problems. I have had accidental breedings with full size goats and Nigerians that turned out all right (unknown until kidding) but I would never do it on purpose. I would recommend getting a mini doe…"

Deborah Niemann-Boehle replied to Lee Pilkovsky's discussion cross breeding
"I would definitely NOT breed an ND doe to a larger buck. ND kids are typically 2-3 pounds when born. I also raise mini manchas, which are a cross between a la mancha doe and a ND buck. Those kids are 6-7 pounds! If you want mini dairy goats, you…"

Are there any risks or drawbacks to breeding my Nigerian does to a buck from another breed? I have some family members who are interested in a few goats for the freezer and had the thought that a larger breed buck would give them more meat while my wife and I would still get the milk we want. My father knows a guy who has nubians but I'm afraid they might be too big. I'm also concerned about my does health during pregnancy  See More

Lee Pilkovsky replied to Deborah Niemann-Boehle's discussion starting to milk
"How much different is milking a goat versus milking a cow? I have experience milking cows but not goats. And what is the best way to maximize the amount of milk to keep for my own use? Can I feed just milk replacer to the kids?"

Lee Pilkovsky replied to Sally Knight's discussion Is she back in heat or not!!!

Cheryl K. Smith replied to Lee Pilkovsky's discussion Dry doe starts milking again?
"There is no way to know for sure. I have had them go a year or more. You often do not see them nursing much, because it is in short bursts. I have a doe with a single kid this year (7 months old) who appeared to be weaning her when I suddenly got a…"

Lee Pilkovsky replied to Lee Pilkovsky's discussion Dry doe starts milking again?
"When can I expect her to start weaning? The little doeling hash been nursing a lot lately, or so it seems. The amount of milk I've been getting has been all over the place, ranging between a few tablespoons to as much as a cup per milking."

Cheryl K. Smith replied to Lee Pilkovsky's discussion Dry doe starts milking again?
"Yep, she is not a dry doe. Her sneaky kid has been nursing and you may be able to get quite a bit of milk, as she starts to wean."
