Milk taste

In November I purchased a new doe as I decided I want to improve my herd.  She is 4 years old, and has freshened twice before coming to me.  She was already bred when I bought her.  She comes from wonderful lines, and milk scores on both Dam and Sire's sides are great for many generations back.  She kidded with 2 lovely doelings and 1 handsome buckling who are now 7 weeks old, she is a fabulous mother and has the sweetest personality.  Last week I started milking her once a day, volume is…See More

"That's a good point.  I should offer him for sale and if he doesn't sell then I castrate.  I am selling 3 other kids and 3 adults (2 does and 1 wether), so I'll just add him to the line up and see what happens."

"With parents who have LA scores like that, he's probably a pretty nice kid. Figuring out the topline isn't that hard. It really is just as simple as I explained it above. I'm sure you know what level or flat is. What you do NOT want…"

"Thanks for the guidance Deborah.  His Dam's LA score was 85 as a first freshener, and dam's mother is 88.  His sire's mother's score is 87, and her dam is 89.  So they fall in the very good category but not…"

"The ultimate value of a buck is in the daughters he throws. Since you don't have a crystal ball, the best you can do is look at his mother and his sire's mother. Are they excellent milkers with good mammary systems? If the parents have LA…"

Evaluating Buckling

Can someone point me towards a good source of information on how to evaluate a buckling?  I am not finding it in the archives, maybe I am not using the correct search terms.  I am improving my heard and until now have not had to do this, all my doelings and bucklings have gone to pet homes.  In November I purchased a beautiful 3 year old milking doe from Willow Moon Farm in VT,  who was downsizing her herd after closing her cheesemaking business.  She was already bred and 4 weeks ago she gave…See More

"It's a balancing act. The shivering is somewhat worrisome, but you also don't want him to stay away from mom for too long. But if he's not nursing, you'll have to get milk into him with a bottle, which usually takes a ton of…"

Trembling kid

Yesterday I had my three 1 week old kids disbudded by the vet.  Everything went well.  This afternoon he must have knocked one of his horns, blood was gushing every where.  Luckily we caught it within 10 minutes of it happening.  I brought him in to the house to clean him up, I pressed a cloth against the point of bleeding and the bleeding has stopped.  But he is trembling like crazy.  I though maybe he was scared, it is his first time outside the barn and away from mama and sisters.  So I took…See More

I looked up his pedigree and will send you details tomorrow. He's registered with ADGA. Sire's bloodline is mostly Chenango Hills and dam's bloodline is mostly Dawnland. Chenango Hills has many milk stars and national milking awards.

Hi,

He has scurs- horn scurs- not scours. He's very healthy.

I need to look up the boys' pedigrees for you. The buckling did sire kids, for a woman I had originally sold him to. But then she decided she didn't like his color (brown and white) and wanted more colorful goats. I have both of his parents and they're wonderful goats, so I took him back and have been trying to decide whether to sell him. He has scurs, so I wouldn't charge very much for him. His dam is a good milker. I should be able to send you details of his bloodlines tonight or tomorrow.
