Whether to wether or not to wether...

Hi all, I am debating whether to wether one of my darling bucklings or keep them both as bucks. I planned to keep one handsome boy intact as a future herd sire because they have very promising genetics and turns out they are both very handsome blue-eyed boys as well! I will have to have another buck to breed their dam again next year. Would it be crazy to have 3 bucks? I can't decide which one would be better for the buck... they both have great personalities but one is a bit more precocious. Their sire is Little Tots Estate Ivory Mist, a very handsome buck who has produced several champions and great milkers. Their dam is my sweet and tough Dancing Demi Goats Surrey who is a great milker. What would you do?

  • True, I could see my herd growing exponentially!

I already have five bucks and am keeping three from this year, so I really have no place calling anyone crazy for having too many bucks.

If you can afford to feed them and you have enough does to breed them to, it would be interesting to see which one threw the better daughters. Of course, that also means you'd have to keep some of the daughters to see how they turned out.

  • If you don't want to keep both of the them intact that long, another thing you could do is take them to several buck shows in the spring and see who places higher in the lineup (assuming they are ADGA registered, disbudded, and tattooed). This won't tell you who produces better does, but it will tell you who has better conformation from the judge's point of view.

Piedmont Dairy Goat Association has a few buck shows at their show in Shelby in June. North Carolina Dairy Goat Association is going to have at least two buck shows, possibly three at their show in Rocky Mount the end of May. And if you're willing to travel to SC, they are going to have a few buck shows at their Clemson show mid-May. If you're really interested, you could check out the shows in TN, but I can't tell you anything about them aside from the fact that the Music City Classic in Lebanon in early May did not have any buck shows. There may be other shows that do, though.

Just another idea to toss around. It is probably what I will do if I ever have to decide between two brothers but don't want to keep them both well into adulthood.
