What's wrong with my baby goats?

I have six nubian kids all about three weeks old. Five does and one buck. All of their anal area looks irritated and are bleeding. They are all very healthy, they run and buck. They dont act like it really bothers them. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Hi Kolti,

I'm curious if you've figured out anything with your babies.  Hope all is going well for you.

  • They have no other raw spots. Non of my adults have it, just the kids.

  • This doesn't really look like it starts with the anus. I would describe this more as raw skin under the tail. The one picture looks like it is just the edges of the hair that are raw. Do they have raw skin anywhere else? They could get sores like that if they had sore mouth, but they would have sores around their mouth and eyes also, and the whole herd would get it. Also, if it was mange (mites) different goats would have it in different places. It is so weird that it is in the same place on all of the kids.

  • LOL!  I was tired at midnight!  I just realized the article says Fenbendazole works on pinworms.  I guess it worked to the author of that article then. :)

I wish I knew for sure, but I don't off hand.  I'll look on the bottle of Safeguard I have...So, Safeguard doesn't say anything about pinworms.  Quest (which is Moxidectin) and Ivermectin say pinworms.  Maybe there's a way to know if that's the problem or not first?  I'm not sure.  However, it did say one sign of pinworms is being able to see then around the anus, so then you'd know...I wish I knew more about deworming so I could have a better answer, but maybe someone else will know more.  Best wishes, and keep us posted about what you find out/ do for them and how it goes.

So should I worm the kids with safeguard? As for all my goats as well? What would the dosage be?

  • That is so weird how it's mostly around the edges... Are they itching their behinds on something?  Pin worms, maybe?  Here's something I read about pinworms in a Dairy Goat Journal article:

    • Pinworms: Signs for pinworms include scratching their butt and visible worms around the anus. I have found that Fenbendazole works to kill them, but also washing the anus with warm water and a touch of Ajax dish soap works to relieve the immediate itch. After washing the anus, applying some petroleum jelly or Vaseline to the area is comforting to the goat and also suffocates the pinworms.
  • Yeah I really want to know what I can do to fix this. They act perfectly fine. None of the adults have it, just the kids. Thanks Patty!

  • Wow, Kolti.  I've never seen anything like that, but I will pray you find an answer soon.  That is very strange.  Hugs and best wishes to you and kids.

  • Your pictures aren't working, Kolti... can you load them using the little picture at the far left of the editing box that you enter your text?
