What minerals/feed do YOU use?

I thought I could start this thread and see what everyone feeds. I give my does a grain mix that contains ADM 16% (I LOVE ADM!) Beet pulp Alfalfa pellets black oil sunflower seeds I up the alfalfa pellets when does lose weight while nursing kids I use Cargill Right Now Onyx cow minerals. Before that I was using Purinas minerals, which I didnt like at all. I chose to change to the Onyx because it has so much copper in it. Bucks get MannaPro minerals that contains Ammaonium Chloride. What feed and minerals does everyone else feed? Curious to know!

Mind you, these studies are for humans, not goats, but this is the information I found. Molasses is high in iron AND copper, and I don't *think* that there is much competition between the two in this form of intake.

THIS STUDY on rats showed that copper levels were only decreased with high iron intake if the animals were already copper deficient.

According to this research, copper is necessary for iron absorption, and neither are inhibitors to each other. It actually says that CALCIUM can inhibit iron absorption, and so the two should not be supplemented together at the same time... http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/minerals/iron/

Sulfur binds to copper and prevents it from being absorbed. That's why I like to use unsulfured molasses and only feed unsulfured raisins for treats.

Its ok if they are at equal amounts of each other in the mineral right? But say the iron is higher than the copper in ppm, the iron will overtake it. Or vice versa.

We need to get our minerals straight dont we?!?!? LOL

I thought molasses was pretty common in feeds and recommendations for what to feed. So that was why I was startled. Whew. Feel better now.

    What does ADM stand for?

Adm stands for Archer Daniels Midland

  • Molasses actually has a lot of great nutrients and minerals in it.

  • I feed pelleted ADM and it has molasses in it. No problems here!

Oh and speaking of molasses, is there too much molasses in Purina Goat Chow? I was thinking about adding this to the feed mixture......
  • There is molasses in all the sweet feeds 'specially formulated for goats so I don't think molasses is a problem for goats in general.

  • Wait. So molasses is the harmful ingredient?? O.O
