  • TY Too late anyways....the deed is done! They have thrown themselves on the ground in agony of course. Hopefully it passes before too long!

I don't recall hearing of anyone giving kids pain meds for banding, although banding does hurt. It varies from kid to kid. Some seem to get over it fairly quickly, and some scream for hours and throw themselves on the ground, etc. I'm traveling and don't have all of my goat reference works with me, so I can't comment on dosage because I never trust my memory for things like that. There are just too many drugs in the world to think that I can remember them all accurately.

Whoever sold you the kids should have castrated them for you. That's pretty much standard. It's just not nice to send kids home with a new owner and tell them to castrate them right off the bat.

If you are planning to raise goats at some point, I highly recommend getting a Burdizzo. There is zero risk of tetanus because it never breaks the skin. It just crushes the cord on each side of the scrotum. And the kids get over it within 15 minutes. We banded for a few years before switching to a Burdizzo, and I'll never go back to banding.
