Treatment for lice on kids

We've just noticed lice on our 3 week old kids. It's worse on one in particular. I think it's the type that attaches onto the skin. I've sprinkled DE on the bedding, but that's more preventative than anything. What are your recommendations for treatment. We treated the adults with Ivermectin paste. Can we give that to the kids? Thanks for your help!

  • I have not but I know someone who did. She said it worked for her. Her vet was the one who put it on the does, and she said they were all quite yellow.

My vet recommended in the past when I had lice - a combo of the DE and sulfur powder. It worked for them - they were adults. Has anyone ever used sulfur for parasite treatment?

  • Oral or injectable ivermectin would only work for sucking lice, which are sucking the blood. If the goats have biting lice, you need to use a pour-on, such as ivermectin or Eprinex pour-on.

  • Be careful with the DE if you decide to use it.  Last summer I used it and it worked well.  I didn't notice any extremely dry skin from it.  However, I used it this winter, and they got SO dry.  One of them is still having a ton of dandruff now, two months later.  She's the one I used the most DE on, because she seems to be more prone to lice than the others.

I have used a pyrethrin based spray called Equisect.  It is made from chrysanthemum flowers, and approved for organic use.  It worked very well both for goat lice and fleas on the dog.  I would have loved to use it this winter, but of course I couldn't get the goats wet when it was SO cold, and it really does have to be applied fairly heavily and evenly to work well.  I wonder if the doe would dislike the smell of the spray all over her babies??  Not sure about that, but otherwise I'd think it was safe.  It's meant to be a fly spray for use as often as needed.   Here's the label information on the Equisect. http://farnamhorse.com/pdf_label/equisect_all.pdf

  • I use Eprinex for my goats, and since it doesn't have a withdrawl time for milk or meat, I feel like it's safe for kids. At 3 weeks, I would use it if I needed to. If you want to try something a little "safer", you could start with Diatomaceous Earth, and see if that gets you anywhere.
