Totally Perplexed

Hello everyone !!

Its been awhile since I have posted or asked any questions....just been reading all the info. But I totally perplexed when it come to my 3 year old doe. She seems off to me. I know this sound crazy but here goes..I have 6 Nigerians they have pasture and Blackberry bushes they are currently working on. They get fresh water twice daily and are fed some beautiful grass hay. I live in Washington and the weather has taken a bit of a turn. All the goats are fine but this one doe.  She is fluffed up she fluffs up off and on all day. She is eating and  drinking (she especially like it when the water is warm) she is urinating and having normal stool. Her temp is normal. She is just off!! Although she is eating she more picky about it then normal. When all the others are eating instead of getting right in there with them she hangs back. I checked her color which is good. I have given her probiotics and am giving her B complex injections as well as thiamine I have also given her an injection of Banamine in the event she has pain.  She just seem very slow in movement and deliberate. I have gone over her with a fine tooth come looking for anything that can give me a clue. But I am perplexed!!  I know this sounds odd almost like calling the vet to say nothing is wrong all is normal but she's just slow and again I use the term "fluffed"..Anyone got any ideas ????  Thanks...Lisa

  • I'm not a fan of giving a goat injections when you don't have any idea what's wrong, and if you've seen no difference, then it's not helping anyway. Goats do fluff up when it gets cold.

Years ago a vet told me (on a Saturday night at 9:00) that if a goat is walking around, eating, and drinking, she doesn't get too excited. Your goat is doing all that. Most goats love warm water when it's cold out (just like we like warm drinks), and goats are just generally pickier eaters than most animals.

How long have you had all of your goats?

  • no haven't bred her,,

  • Has she been bred recently?
