tattoo pen

First kidding coming up next month and was online at Hoegger looking at tattoo kits and saw a new tattoo "pen".  Wondering if anyone has used this?

  • Disbudding needs to be done when they are quite young -- like a week for bucklings and two weeks for doelings. Tattooing can be done whenever. Personally we take one day and put the herd tattoo in every kids' right ear, and then another day, we put the individual ID tattoos in everyone's left ear. We do that for two reasons -- 1) we don't get green ink on our faces when the person holding the goat flips them around for the second ear (and the kid jerks its head and swipes the green ink across your face) and 2) everyone gets tattooed, and no one is left out. A lot of people do it the day they're picked up. I bought a lot of kids with green ears when I was building my herd, and you see a lot of kids with green ears at shows.

  • I'm not sure I understand your question. If you want to register with more than one registry, you just have to make sure that your tattoo sequence is available with all of them.

  • I don't know. I only belong to ADGA.

  • A lot of people do. ADGA requires that your goats are tattooed before they leave your farm when you sell them. (if you are selling registered goats)

  • I've never heard of it being on goats. Considering how hard it is to read people's handwriting, a pen sounds like a bad idea. Ditto on everything Rachel said.

  • I saw it, but I can't imagine it being easy to use... It would be very hard to get a clean, clear tattoo of one letter, let alone a set in each ear!! Way too much stress on my kids, in any scenario I can think of. The tattoo kits with the clamping system are one shot, each ear. I think it's faster, and less stress. Of course, I haven't seen the pen in action, but in my mind, that's the case.
