Strange noises during heat?

I'm having a kind of strange experience with my 5 month old doeling.  I'm pretty sure she's in heat (tail wagging, wet rear, and her wethered brother is knocking her all over the place without a response) PLUS (and this is what's worrying me) she's making this very strange guttural sound.  It's something between a human gulping and sobbing sound.  She does it with her mouth closed.  She's also making her normal noises.  And everything else seems to be normal (appetite, desire for attention, drinking, etc.).
I'm hoping one of you can confirm for me if this is a part of the heat cycle for some does.  I've never seen her in heat before so I'm not sure what she usually does.  Her mama is much quieter and I've never heard this sound from any of them before.

  • Most people breed for kidding once a year, and since pregnancy is five months that means breeding seven months after kidding. But you can move that a couple months either way. I have some goats that I'm milking for 12-15 months, so I'm breeding them much later. The important thing to remember is that you should stop milking at least two months before they kid again.

After a doe has kidded, when is a good time to breed again? Is there a set rule or average time? Should you wait 6 months or when you want to breed? We would like to try and time kidding in the later part of the fall. Thanks, Tammy

  • Oh, yeah! She's in heat. Some of them do make VERY strange noises that sound almost human. Some also get very violent. I've had a couple does who butt heads with a buck until his head bleeds, and recently I had a doe who kept biting the buck's scrotum. They're very interesting animals.
