Still worrying.... Is she too big?

Chloe now has 8 weeks till kidding. This is a photo from today. She has at least two kids in there (vet said he could see two by ultrasound but that there might be more; his probe was not good enough to penetrate more than about 3 to 4 cm - less than 2 in. - so he was not confident he had seen everything.)
Chloe always has liked her food. She is like the message on the airplane, "Put the mask on the adult first." Stand back please while this goat gets to feed herself first. She can and does happily eat what the others reject. She will eat out of the old hay pile. She will eat things that have (heavens forbid!!) hit the ground. The consequence is that she always has a huge rumen. Now though, she looks like she has two rumens. Does it all look normal at this point or too big? She is still only being fed hay, mostly meadow hay and some clover rye. She gets no grain, but has free choice minerals and seaweed. She seems the picture of good health and is alert and lively (so long as one doesn't stand between her and something she wants to eat.)

By the way, she is now not yet 20 1/2 inches tall and is 22 months old.

  • She looks great! She might be a little on the heavy side, as evidenced by the lack of sharp withers or pin bones, but I wouldn't worry about it. Pregnancy is not a time to put a goat on a diet. Once she has the kids, she'll lose weight like crazy. Glad to know she has two kids in there. I hate singles because they're usually huge.

  • I think she looks fine. My older doe's rumen looks like it needs its own zip code!
