St. Patty's Day Babies

My little girl Annabelle kidded yesterday afternoon.  Annabelle will be 2 years old next month.  We waited with her, because I felt like she needed a little extra growth before.  Now I am glad I waited.  Yesterday to say the least was a tough kidding.  She labored all day and was super emotional about me leaving her for only a second.  Around 2:30 she really got serious and started pushing at 2:41.  I quickly realized at 3 that she was having problems.  This kid was BIG.  She was stretching very well and he was not helping.  His legs were twisted and his head tilted to the side.  I was able to use my finger to readjust his head and move his legs to a better position.  Even with this she couldn't get him out.  As she was pushing I had to VERY gently pull.  She slowly started to tare and I was getting really worried.  We couldn't get this boy out.  Finally after a huge push on her part she got his head out and pop she tore.  I felt horrible for her.  She was in so much pain and this boy was BIG.  A few moments later she started to push again.  Again this huge head started to come out.  She was able to get him out a little easier, but he caused her to rip more.  This boy was bigger than the first.  I couldn't believe the size.  Since she was a FF I never gave her any grain.  She's been on mostly just grass hay, but I have used a few bales of grass/clover mix hay.  Baby boy 1 wieghed 4.23 lbs and baby boy 2 weighed 4.65 lbs.  Mommy is doing good today.  She's a fantastic mother.  Was really hoping for a girl from her, but oh well.  2 bouncing baby boys!

  • I think the only time I would worry about tearing is if the tear reached the rectum. Then I'd call in a vet.

  • Ginger didn't bleed, she just has a lumpier whoo hah than she used to. lol

  • Congratulations! Those are big kids, especially for a first freshener. Glad things went well!

Don't worry too much, Margaret. I've only had a couple of goats with tiny little tears that would have been too small to suture. And it was always first fresheners. They healed just fine.

  • Cool, so I guess it just depends then! I am just envisioning tears that don't want to quit bleeding! Thinking most of them would probably be best left alone but worrying about the bleeding. Thinking that it would be an area that would bleed bad!

  • Ginger tore last year, and I did not suture or call a vet. She healed just fine.

  • Or do I need to stock up on suturing supplies too?

  • OMG!@ Ya'll are scaring me to death! I never even thought about them just tearing like that. Does that happen often? What do we do? Does that mean we have to find a vet for that or do you just leave it and doctor it or what?

  • CONGRATULATIONS!! Ginger waited until after midnight to drop her triplets! Just because I said on St. Paddy's day that I thought "today is the day". I'm sure she waited just to prove me wrong. lol Last year, she did the same as your doe with the super sized kids. I was really thankful for triplets this year, because she was the same size pregnancy wise,  and I didn't want her to struggle with getting them out.

  • Hej from Sweden!
Wow what big beautiful baby boys. Poor mommy; glad she is doing well.
    Congratulations!!
  • Congradulations. Those boys sound huge. Can't wait to see there pictures.
