Roller coaster milk production

I'm new to this and have only the one milking doe I have been milking for a couple of months. She consistently gives me 1 and a half pints (or pounds) at each milking (1 and a half quarts per day). Yesterday I picked up my new 1 yr old buck and my milking doe went into raging heat. In the morning she was fine (before buck arrived) but in the evening she threw a fit about being milked, laying down, kicking, moaning, and not eating. I struggled to milk her out and only got a cup and a half and could tell there wasn't much in there! Then this morning she was even worse, refusing to eat and having fits over being milked, mumbling (talking) to the buck over the fence even on the milk stand. Only a cup and a half again of milk! After our morning battle I was afraid she'd never get up there again so I coaxed her up there later and just stroked and brushed her (which she loves) but still she would barely eat. Tonight she was much calmer and REALLY hungry and I could tell she was really full of milk. I got a QUART tonight for the first time ever! What a roller coaster! Is this typical behavior when does are in heat???

  • That is rather extreme, but reduced milk production is a symptom of heat.
