Panacur dosage

Hi all, hopefully this is the last question I have to post for awhile!!  My Vet gave me a dosage for Panacur to treat the giardia in all my animals.  It seemed odd that the dosage was smaller for the goats/sheep/llama than it was for the dogs/cats.  She wants me to treat for 3 days, wait 14 then treat again for 3 days.  I'd like just the amount of cc's per 10 pounds of body weight (rather than having to have a mathematical degree to figure out the dosages)...could someone help me with that? Thanks in advance! Tammy

  • I  found a place were Albendazole is listed as one of the drugs used to treat giardia in people, since this is available as a wormer  for animals it might be a possible answer. Problem is, as Deborah indicated about us not knowing about the giardia you have no wayof knowing about accurate dosage.

I have that exact safeguard you got Tammy, and I hope we didn't waste our money and efforts. According to what I read a few days ago on Fiasco Farms site. It has become pretty much useless in most places as a wormer. Apparently they have developed immunity to it in most of our country and some others.

So keep a close eye out and don't assume it will fix your problems. If things persist you may need to try something else. I know Jeffers sales the albendazole if you need to try it later. They might can help you with appropriate dosages if you call and request a call back from a vet.

Best to you sweety. I will be thinking of you.

Deborah, take it from me,Glenna, and Tammy you never want this added to the list of things you have had experience with. The fact that you haven't is one more great blessing bestowed upon you.

  • Well, for intestinal worms, I know people used to triple the dosage before there was a goat version available. So, if you had a 50 pound goat, you'd set the dial for 150 pounds. Sorry I don't have any experience with giardia.

  • I got the huge tube of equine Safe-guard (worms 4 1,000 pound horses) 92 g paste 10% (100 mg/g) it's set in 500 increments. I figured I would put it in smaller cc syringes....
  • What for of panacur did she give you? the horse paste? or a liquid? Does the label say what the dosage will be per ml of medication? Is one one of these? http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_search_results.html?gas=panacur It is very hard to actually answer a question like this unless we know exactly what you have.

  • Google "goatwisdom"  and see if you see a place to look up giardia. I googled "giardia treatment for goats" and found: goatwisdom-giardia  On here they recommend 3X the horse dose 7days for goats! Safeguard is the product they mention but the drug is fenbendazol ( may have mispelled that ) anyway same drug. If I were you I would look up each type of animal that way and research them. I hate to say it , but it is to important and you just can't always trust the vets opinion on treating these animals. I can't tell you what to do but I know how safe this stuff is and not likely to O. Dose it. More likely that it just does nothing. I PERSONALLY would sock it to them!  I like this 3x for 7day dose! If I couldn't find better info I would do this on all mine! Just my opinion. I didn't even know they used this for giardia I would have thought it would be something stronger, so I would really use a lot of this. And you were very smart to question this. Because goats don't normally get low doses of anything!
