Okay...Rookie Question About Milk Flavor

So far we've decided to get a pair of Nigerian Dwarfs because we seriously enjoyed the goats that we've had in the past. These are to be our companions and brush nibblers and just for the pure entertainment that they bring.

 We were thinking of doing the milk thing  because my husband is lactose intolerant (cow's milk) and we've heard great things about goat's milk in comparison. The problem is that he tried the goat's milk from the store and he said it tasted "funny". In other words he didn't want to trade the cow's milk for the goat's milk.

Well, I just read something that said that the goats' milk sold in stores can be very distasteful and that the fresh milk is entirely different than that.

 

What say you?

    I tried to set him up but everytime I touched his legs he went to sit down so decided it was better just to let him be

    did you set him up or do you just stand with them leashed?

    lol.  now I want to bred Rebekah to him lol.  they both have longer bodies.  I am curious as to what they would make - like I need more goats.....  The little doe is so incredibly sweet.  just like her name.  She is always in my lap and paws at my chest.  Sammy is getting bigger and bigger and starting the pushing and butting behavior.  He nurses at every opportunity, but the doe thinks it is too much trouble - she tries and with the slightest resistance - she just finds "real food" to eat. 

    I did see a girl at the fair this past year - teenager  - with a goat that wouldnt stand still - she was jerking her around quite a bit - not a pretty site - and she seemed to be comfortable in the ring (the human ^&^)

    that's awesome you have the 4H experience - I never did any of that - I wouldnt have a clue how to show a goat.....

    my goats would probably be the "unruly" one and make me look like a total knucklehead. or maybe a lion tamer..... lol

    I love my NGD milk. LOVE it. Totally agree it's much better than cow's milk. Don't base your judgements off of store bought for SURE.

     

    Re CAE testing... just wanted to add that even with paperwork showing a doe is negative for it, it can show up later. There is not a "no chance" ability to know that your negative paper work will STAY negative.

    That's awesome, Kare! Can't wait to give it a go! (This is all so exciting since all we've ever had were goats for 4H showing & as pets). BTW, we only showed the goats as kids and dry yearlings....so there ya go!

    I drink the milk raw, but my goats are all tested for CAE.  I would never recommend purchasing a dairy goat unless I was very sure there was no chance it had CAE and I had seen paperwork proving it. 

     

    As far as the taste, I had Nubians, Kinders and a mini-Nubian before and the milk was sometimes goaty and sometimes tolerable, but almost always I could taste a slight goaty after-taste.  I was very skeptical when I heard Nigerian milk was so tasty.  I drove 3 hours away to taste it and even until I brought the cup up to my lips I was afraid of what it would taste like.  But I was very pleasantly surprised.  It was better than cows milk, richer, sweeter, and as hard as I tried, there was no goaty aftertaste!

    THANK you for adding that. We drink 1% cows milk right now so that's an awesome comparison. So, you don't pasteurize the milk first? Folks here do if they're raising babies off of mama's milk and she hasn't been tested for CAE or has a history. So I think I assumed that you would for human consumption, too.

     

    Do you just put the milk in fridge for a couple of days then skim off the cream, right? Coolness.
