Noisy rutting billy goat

Hi there,

we have a billy goat that is almost one year that is rutting at the moment - lots of noises, even in the night, shrieks, squeals, grunts, you name it!  How long with this last and is there any way to calm him down?

  • Thanks Julia!  Wow, you know, mine are in at night anyway, and you're right, he is quieter then.  I can't imagine the noise 24/7 if they were out all the time!!

  • Katharine, don't know if it would work in your situation, but I lock my bucks in a barn at night. Otherwise they are at it all night driving me and everyone around me crazy. They don't like to go in, but they've learned that's the routine. They get a special treat in there and I close the barn door. They have shelves in there and they hop up there and are quiet all night and resume the madness when the door is opened in the morning.

  • That's why people only have intact bucks for breeding. The only way to stop the behavior is to castrate him.

  • Our buck makes noises, stomps his feet, and sticks his tongue out.... Makes me laugh every time.

  • Comical, no, that didn't come to mind!!!!  He's noisy, constantly calling with a squeaky bleat that sounds like his voice is breaking (do goats voices break?!) or he has a sore throat.  I'll need a few more seasons here to work out if there is a heat season, but just looking around, I'm always seeing kids so I don't think there is.

  • There's really no telling. It's the worst when there are does in heat or here in the US in the fall, which is traditionally breeding season. But since you're so close to the equator, you probably don't have a breeding season. They are rather ... comical, wouldn't you say?
