newborn with breathing trouble

We had goat kids born this afternoon.  We kept checking on her (the barn cam broke) and when we found them she had all three but no placenta out.  They had been licked but were wet and we got them cleaned up.  One has had raspy, wheezing breathing so bad that it gasps with his mouth open and tongue out unless we can get him calm and he will close his mouth to rest (but still wheeze).  We tried suctioning him out until it was clear were getting nothing more out, held him on our laps head down and finally as a last resort, tried swinging him.

Nothing has worked.  We did get him warm first (after suctioning wasn't working) and he is now inside in a warm room on a heating pad.  We are trying to keep him as quiet as possible, but are really concerned he is not going to make it.

After he was warm and had rested a while (after the sucking), he did look like he wanted to nurse so we put him under mom and helped him.  We did this twice and both times it put him in such a spasm of gasping that we didn't try anymore.

Any advice is so very welcome!  Thanks!

  • Thank you both!  I admit it was a sad night!  My husband has the ability to work hard trying to save the baby and then when its over, move on.  i evidently have to cry it out for a day... But sweet consolation is the 1 lb baby who has survived.  She is a whopping 2 lb 6 oz now and is doing her goat parkour all over the house.  Thinks she is a "people" and is over all just a little sweet heart.  We all had to hold her for a while after the other baby died.  Having goats is so much fun, so much work, so much joy and so much sadness.  Thankfully the sadness seems to be few and far between. :)

  • So sorry! You really did everything you could. Thanks for updating us. {hugs}

  • Poor little guy! So sorry. I'm glad you were there to keep him comfortable through it all.

  • He passed away a little bit ago. We tried swinging again which seemed to help and I thought he was going to pull through, but it looked like he finally just gave up. Poor little guy! He was held and loved till the end though.
