new kid with disjointed knee?

Hi

I have been so busy I haven't been on here for ages.Even to just read postings.Anyway one of my does kidded yesterday afternoon. She had 3 that are basically ok.Up,fuzzy and nursing well. However one has a rear leg that looks like it's knee is disjointed. It will bend forward so it is up on its hoof toes then back. All other legs are fine. And despite this it is getting around well.I am wondering as there were three kids if it got injured during the birthing process.Am also wondering what one should do.I do not think it is broken because I have felt around and moved leg around and it does not yell or act in pain.could it be weak and will it strengthen up?should I try to splint it or put some kind of brace on it?Thanks for any advice

  • Hey thank you for replies.i tried splinting it earlier today but did not succeed.so I decided to give it some time on its own.Already today it's first full day out in the world it has gotten much stronger. So i think it will be good. They can be so resilient.

  • If the joint is going backwards, you can splint it to keep it from going in the direction it is not supposed to go in. I had a kid born once (one of quints) that had a pastern that was going backwards, and I splinted it for a few days, and it was normal. Like you, I was wondering if it was broken, but I think the ligaments or muscles were just weak and maybe it was turned the wrong way in utero -- being so cramped in there!

  • I think it sounds like the kid may have contracted tendons. They are fixable and I'm sorry I can't tell you more, but my human kids just decided they need me:-) You can google the condition to see if it sounds like that's what it is, as well as for info on how others have treated it.
