New and looking for information

I am looking to getting a small herd started this spring. I live in Western NY close to PA. I have decided I would like to get Nigerian Dwarfs because of their size and I have several health issues. I also have 5 small grandchildren and a grand daughter would like to start showing if I can find a show that will allow her she is only 5 but has gone to the fair and watched the last 2 years. I am looking forward to learning as much as possible before spring.

  • If you want to buy them, you can click on the cover pictures on the right side of this page. There will be options to buy them from Amazon or directly from me. For the next couple of weeks, I will be including a free copy of EcoThrifty whenever anyone buys any of my books. I need to get that up on my website, but in the meantime, if you order, I'll include the free book.

If you want to get them from the library, you should be able to get them through inter-library loan, if your local library doesn't have them. But most libraries have them.

I will try and find your book, I am always looking for a good book that I can keep so I can refer back to it when I need information. Thank you for letting me know about them.

  • We don't actually drink milk, but we put it in coffee and tea, use it in cooking, and we make lots of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and other yummy foods! We also make soap. Two of my books (Homegrown & Handmade and Raising Goats Naturally) have complete soapmaking instructions with recipes. They're available at libraries if you don't want to buy them.

  • Actually, I want goat milk because I like goat milk fudge and heard great things about the soap. I have never tried the milk but I do not drink milk very often.

  • Welcome to the group! I'm also a health coach. Did you want milk goats for that reason? Some people find that raw and/or non-homogenized and/or goat rather than cow milk is more tolerable for them than store-bought cow milk.

  • I told my kids to slow down , my daughter is expecting her third. It is nice to hear they are easy to handle. I am going to go meet two breeders tomorrow and see what their property is like. I also , am checking to see what health records and milk production they have. If these two farms are not satisfactory then I will continue looking elsewhere.  Is there anything else I should ask?

  • Hi Tammy, nice to meet you. I have a couple of health issues myself, namely arthritis, and the Nigerian Dwarfs are pretty easy for me to handle. Most of them have a gentle nature so they should be fine with your grandchildren. I think it's wonderful you want to share your goats with them, I must admit to being a bit envious that you have 5! I'm still waiting for human grandbabies, so I have to be content with grandgoats.  ;)
