Neglected/abused goats at fair...

Okay so now I have time to tell you about my fair that was two weeks ago!! So there is this gal that brings these goats to the fair every year just totally sick. SUPER skinny. All of them super depressed and very droopy. I found lice on her goats two weeks ago from today. I talked to some 4H leeders and some people on the 4H board and they had a vet come and the vet had me go in the pen with the gals goats and show him the lice so I went in there and was pickinng lice off them with tweezers. The vet told the people on the 4H board what the goats need and so they went and picked some up and treated all the goats that were at the fair which inclueded my 9 that I had there. The worst part is that three of my goats ended up at this gal's place last fall and she had one of them at the fair. He looked terrible. He was so skinny and weak he couldn't jump off the straw bale that was in his pen without falling. The grey doeling she had there was so skinny that her face and neck were commpletely sunk in andyou could feel the bone in her neck. I have pictures of that doeling when she was at her previous home and she was soo healthy and plump. Iv been in just terrible shock I can't even describe how bad the goats looked... When I saw that one of my goats that I sold to a different gal had sold them to this gal and she had him at the fair looking like that my heart dropped and i had tears in my eyes when i ran to go tell my mom. There is plenty more I could write about this gal with the horses, pigs, goats, and cows that she has. I went to her house about a year and a half ago and NOT ONE animal on that place was healthy.

I just don't know what to do. I don't really know how or who I could call to turn her in. I should have done this a year ago but I just don't know and honestly have been just scared to get into a situation like this but this year is just killing me and something has got to be done soon. I am sure goats are dying at her place all the time!! Everyday I think about my babies and all the other animals that are down there with that gal. I don't know what to do about it!! :'( does anyone know what I could do or have any suggestions? Thank you!

  • Well I have not gotten very far on this... Iv talked to some other people that know this gal and how she is. Right now I am just findingmore and more stuff out about her and her family. It just disgusts me with the things I have heard. Thank you all for the info!

  • Animal Regulation will go out and check the operation. One thing I do know - they are very different thoughts on what is needed for animals and what is not. I have said before - some people should not be parents and some should not own goats!

Call Animal Reg. ^^ sorry for your experience - I have thought showing would be awesome - however, not considering the possibility of getting "something" - but keeping them in a pen for 5 days - sigh.... dont think I could. :( However, I am glad others do - I love to see all the breeds.

  • Hi, Kolti,

I'm really impressed with how you handled that situation with the goats at the fair.  I'm disappointed the 4H folks and the vet didn't do more for those goats. I'm not sure how the laws work where you are, or what animal welfare agencies are nearby, but I'm sure you can do some reading and find out. Here in New York State, the animal welfare laws are in the Agriculture and Markets Law, not the Penal Law, so many police agencies either don't know much about these laws, or don't know how to evaluate livestock for neglect. On top of that, the law treats pets (cats and dogs) differently than other animals, like goats, and it's more difficult to have someone investigated for neglecting or abusing a farm animal.  But, with all that in mind, I would suggest you call your local Animal Control officer, or the Humane Society, or the ASPCA, or maybe even all three. You may have to be very persistent, and call whenever you find out about an incident where an animal is being neglected. Because the enforcement agent you talk to might never have seen a goat close up, you will probably need to describe very specifically why you believe the goat is being neglected - the signs of starvation and fleas are great examples. I wish there were more courageous, compassionate young people like you in the world! I hope you will let us know how it works out.

  • I would file a complain with Animal Control, maybe they are called something else in your area.  They usually investigate any abuse and if not corrected will remove the animals.  I live in Maryland and while they mainly deal with cats and dogs, and have heard of occasions when they had to remove horses and goats.
