Our doe, Olson Acres Cinnamon, delivered 4 boys this afternoon. It was a really rough delivery. The first one was hard on her, but came out. The second was breech and I ended up going in after him, mom was getting too weak. He aspirated fluid and was pretty weak and took 2 hours to get on his feet. Third also aspirated fluid and was covered in really nasty yellowish orange gunk, and was the fourth, and both were huge compared to the first 2. The doe had gone into labor 3 days ago, then stopped. I am really thankful these babies made it despite the issues. I'll get a picture of them as soon as I can, but am pretty beat right now. And I have one more doe looking like she is getting ready to kid, maybe tonight, and am out of kidding stalls. Fun :-)

  • Thank you Janel!

Kare, the  boys are doing well. 2 of them are living in my house and getting bottles. The smallest was getting left by mom. I think she knew he wouldn't make it with her. She quit cleaning him up and he still has to have his chin held to eat. He doesn't suck well, but is getting better. The two boys are going to a bottle home tomorrow with a woman who successfully nursed day-old kittens when their mom got hit, so I think it will be good. They are getting very playful, and my husband is having a hard time letting me sell them (I am selling them so they will be cared for, would have given them to the right home, but I always worry that easy come easy go).

  • Congrats! - you were busy!  How are the 4 boys doing?

  • Someone posted it just recently and pretty much it is a 55 gallon barrel with a hole cut in it so they can come in and out.  Then looks like they cut a hole in the top and support the heat lamp somehow and creates a little cave.  I have also seen one made out of ply wood.  Made a box with a hole cut in it so they can move in and out then the same for the top.  I will try and see if I can find that post.  Pretty sure it was just last week someone commented on it and brought it back to the front of the post.
  • I saw you mentioned them on another post, but missed the directions. Can you share them? And thanks :-)  I like them all, though this one little guy has stolen my heart he is so sweet.
  • Have you thought about building one of those heat lamp incubators?  It might help him until he gets a little bigger to maintain his own temp.  We are going to build some just in case.  We have a pretty nice living area for when they have babies, but I live in Colorado and the winters are very unpredictable!! They are all super cute...

  • Here are the pics of the kids from this batch on facebook. The one little guy needs a pet home and extra TLC. He is very small and I just want to give him a fighting chance, but don't have enough time or ability to have a baby in the house.

  • I'm glad to know that, thank you! That will make life simpler. I have not been using it correctly, not even on my human babies.
  • Yes, I stick it towards the very back of the kid's mouth where the throat starts, and I also hold the kid head down with the nose below the lungs, so gravity helps. Guess I got that idea from watching human doctors and midwives. That's why the pointy part is so long on the green bulb syringes they use for human babies. It will only reach to the back of the mouth on humans, so I aim for that spot in baby goats.
  • Wow, didn't know all that about humans. Always thought it was just to help get them breathing!

I don't think I would want to swing the kid hard. As you say, they are slippery. It's all I can do to hold on to them if I need to do it (counting today, I have only done this 3 times, 2 today and once the alpine). I think swinging too hard could cause brain damage. I mostly aim for the idea that the fluid come out if they are upside down, and it does. Maybe I am not as good with the bulb syringe. I can't do any more than clear the mouth, or possibly the nose (although it really seems to big on nigi noses). Hmmm...maybe I have some technique work to learn here. Do you actually put it in the throat? I always thought it had to be aimed at a cheek or something.
