milk management with 1 kid

I haven't gotten on here in ages-so hopefully someone can direct me to right info.

My 2 does just kidded (3rd fresheners)and one had just one kid.Born Sept 14.The 2nd evening I took the mom to milk out because her udder was getting lobsided. But now as the kid is getting more mobile she is nursing both sides pretty much.

My question is what is the best approach to keeping milk production up,as I imagine with only one kid milking there won't be enough demand.Should I start the overnight dogcrate routine soon? And if I don't do that will the production be affected? And if I do milk most mornings but not one every now and then will the kid take care of milking mom out?Right now it does seem like udder is never that full-like kid IS taking care of milking.Thank you any opinions and advice on this.

  • Here is the post on starting to milk, which may be the one you were thinking about:

Remember it is all about supply and demand. The doe will only supply enough to meet demand. If you don't milk her regularly, she will only make enough milk to feed one kid (and that kid will be one chunky monkey). Now would be a great time to either start milking her twice a day without separating her from the kid or separating overnight and milking her in the morning. You can put the kid in a dog crate right there next to mom, and only start with a few hours overnight initially, gradually building up to 12 hours. You can go back and forth between these two options, if one works better than the other at various times.
