Kids with sparse facial hair

I have two seventeen day old kids (my first!) whose hair from their eyes to their nose is thin.  Their hair looked normal at birth; it's kind of like the hair on their faces got behind in their otherwise rapid growth.  I'll attach a photo where you can kind of see what I'm talking about.

Is this normal, or is there something I should do about it?

Their mother had hair loss in this area (and on her sides) early in her pregnancy.  I gave her cowp, sunflower and pumpkin seeds (for zinc), and also rubbed sunflower oil into her skin for a few days and it started growing back.

Could the babies be zinc deficient?  If so, could I treat them the same way I did their dam (without the cowp)?
It's my first experience with babies, so I want to be sure I'm not doing anything unnecessary and/or potentially harmful.

Thank you!

  • The general recommendation for copper is 1 gram per 22 pounds, so most adult NDs would need 3-4 grams. If you have sulfur and/or iron in your well water, you might need to do it as often as every 3-4 months.

I don't know of anyone giving copper to kids less than 2 months old, so I don't know how it will work. If you give it to mom, hopefully it will at least increase the copper content of her milk, although that's a gut feeling. I haven't seen any research on that.

  • What would be the best way to get copper in them?

Would giving kids this young cowp be harmful?  Is their system not developed enough for it to imbed and the particles pass through?

I'll make some sunflower/pepita butter for them in case they're low on zinc.  I had stopped supplementing their mom with BOSS a couple months before she started losing her hair, so maybe they have a genetic predisposition to poor zinc absorption (or a higher need for it).

  • It's Animax Copasure.

    2g May 2, and, before that, 2g Feb. 15.

  • It's probably copper deficiency and possibly zinc too. How much copper did you give the mom, and how long ago? Unfortunately there is a brand out there that has very misleading labeling and can lead to deficiency.

  • Ha! I like to think so!

  • I'm not sure about the facial hair thing, but I did want to say that they are exceptionally cute!
