Kid born today without an anus - help!

It appears that one of the triplet doelings born this afternoon to my first freshener does not have an anus.  She was the first kid born and it was immediately apparent that she was small and scrawny, but she did stand and nurse after a good cleaning by mom.  I know she cannot survive this way, but I am at a loss of exactly how to handle this.  Do I: take her to the vet to see what if anything can be done (guess what I'm thinking is possibly complete intestines, but failure to open at the anus); bring her to the house and wait out the inevitable or put her down; leave her with mom until she dies (which seems cruel to mom).   Mom is not particularly attentive right now - looking like a deer in headlights - but hoping that tomorrow is a new day.  We have had 17 births this year and this is the first time we have faced the loss of a kid.  I am incredibly sad and just want to do the right thing.   Some advice or a shoulder to cry on would be appreciated.

  • So sorry - it is hard to lose one of the babies.  I have only had it happen a couple of times and it hurts my heart when it does.

  • So sorry to hear this, Judy!

  • I am so sorry! There isn't really anything that can be done to correct the situation. The standard advice is to put the kid down. This happened to someone on here a few years ago, and they waited until morning to take the kid to the vet to have the vet put the kid down. It happened to us many years ago with a lamb, and he started having seizures within a couple hours of birth, so my husband put him down.
