Hurricane Sandy Update

Greetings from central NJ. We are in day 6 of no power or running water (we have a well). Our property suffered damage with large downed trees but all structures are ok. Some of our neighbors were not as lucky. Our two pet goats, Iris and Georgia hunkerd down in their igloo within their barn. A large tree feel within six feet of the barn, smashing their fence. They emerged very tentatively, Tuesday morning to new leaves and limbs to eat. We are well, just weary of camping out at the home of family who got their power back yesterday. I hope all human and caprine beings who were in Sandy's path emerged as well as we have. Many prayers are being said for those who lost so much. Blessings, Jennifer

  • We will Jennifer, we know what it is like. You see down here in the south where it is pretty much the norm for us on average once a year we realize that the tragedy is really just beginning. It seems every time that it happens you go out and look around and no matter how bad it is you thank God that you and yours survived but then... when you here of those who didn't make it and see all the devastation caused in such a short period of time you realize...it's not over...so much to deal with... for so many. I do understand...EVERY TIME.... there is SOMETHING that has been there my whole life that is suddenly gone forever.

  • Hi all. Thanks for your words and encouragement. We got power back last night! We are so happy to be home. We managed ok with bringing water in for the goats. Our bathtub supply and extra bucket supply dwindled quickly. Collecting rain water on a regular basis is a good idea, Diane. This morning, the goats got a warm bucket of water! Temps were below freezing this morning. I am a teacher and today was the first day back after a week, plus this Monday off. My children went back yesterday to their school. My husband works in NYC in lower Manhattan. His building took in water and they are not allowed back until next week. The Jersey shore, Long Island, Statan Island, etc. are in much worse shape. We have trees to deal with now, but our home is ok. I still have a number of friends in different areas who are dark. Margaret, hurricane Fredric must have been a doozy - six weeks - yikes! Deborah, I imagine you had quite an adventure getting back to IL from MA. I think a generator is at the top of my Christmas wish list. Last year, we lost power in hurricane Irene for five days. Our next door neighbors have lived in their house since 1980. They say that before Irene, they had never lost power for more than a day. These natural disasters seem to be the new normal. Thanks again for your good thoughts, prayers and warm wishes. Please keep them going for those who have lost much. Jennifer

  • I'm glad you and your goats are OK. I hope you are able to get enough water for everyone. That's one of my big worries about being on a well. I usually keep a big stock tank or two under the downspout from the house to collect rainwater, just in case. I hope your power is back on by now.

  • Glad to hear that you are okay!

  • Thanks for letting us know! I like it when folks post about these things and we know that at least some of our forum friends are ok! I worry about u guys cause seeing as I live on the gulf coast I know all to well what you are going through.

Back in "79" when Fredric hit my hubby's (he was only 14 then) family was without power for 6 weeks. We have had many times when we were without it for a week or two because of hurricanes. It is pretty difficult even in summer and I can not imagine what it is like there at this time of year. Prayers for all of you affected by Sandy!

  • I'm glad to hear you and yours are well!  Our prayers go up for those who have been affected.  We're wishing you the best as you clean up any mess you have to deal with, and for safe traveling on roads that may have been damaged.

  • Thanks so much for the update! I'm glad to hear that you and your goats survived, as well as your home and outbuildings! We were in Massachusetts attending a cheese workshop and our flight got canceled, so we got a rental car and headed back to Illinois.

I bet the girls are enjoying the leaves. Ours were certainly happy this past spring when a storm brought down a huge limb in their pasture. Hope you get power back soon!
