Hoof rot

So it has been very wet were we live and Monday I went to to trim hoofs and found that a few of the goats have hoof rot. It has only been 2 months since I last trimmed them and did not expect there hoofs to be so bad. They were not even that over grown. Some of them had the wall of the hoof pulled back from the hoof it self. So we trimmed out the bad part of the wall. leaving a section on the side of the hoof with no wall 1/8" -1/4". I am keeping it clean washing daily. Is there anything else I should be doing. I just want to make sure my goats are happy and healthy and I have learned when it is this wet trim hoofs more often. I have never had this problem before. Thanks in advanced for all advice

  • I know they do make medicine for foot rot. But I wouldn't know what to tell you to use. If it were me and I didn't know what else to do I would put some old fashion blu kote on it! I am pretty sure it wouldn't hurt and just as sure that it would help even though it may not be the "best" thing to use!

  • Wow some of these pics of hoof rot is bad thankfully my goats are not that bad.  Three had the wall of the foot separated from the foot it self. The wall was soft and not hard like it should be. There was some black stuff between the wall and the hoof. We cut out all the wall of the hoof that was soft and cleaned all the black stuff of the foot. It looks like I should use some kind of disenfectant on the hoof and just keep it clean. Not all there feet were like that just one back foot on each goat and I have a buck and two does so they are not all in the same pen.

  • While you are waiting on answers, you might want to go to www.tennesseemeatgoats.com Onion Creek Ranch does some great write ups about a lot of subjects and I just found one on this. If I could do a link I would. Sorry! I looked up "hoof rot in goats" and found it there. My bad it linked itself. I love it when that happens. OK, so if you hit that link and type in hoof rot on their search bar you will see it there. I haven't read it yet but like I said they are always a wealth of info! Hope you find something that helps.

  • Julia, I don't know that much about hoof problems so can you tell me what I would see if I had any hoof rot? I know how to trim them just not what signs to look for as far as a problem goes.
