Help needed finding Buck service in MA

We just relocated from the west coast over to Western Massachusetts along with our 4 Nigerian Dwarf does.  They are thriving here in the hill country.  But I've run into an unexpected problem.  I am having difficulty finding a buck for service that is in this area, or somewhat close by.  The closest that I have found so far is 1hr 20 minutes drive away!  We live in Colrain.  It is west of Greenfield MA, and we are just 3 miles from Vermont, also very close to the New Hampshire boarder.  Does anyone know of a buck that may be available in this area?  Or have any other suggestions for me?

Judy, if you click on Diane's name, and then click on the green "SEND MESSAGE" link under her name in the new window. This will allow you to exchange your email, etc. without everyone being able to view it.

  • Hi Diane,

I'd like to follow up off line and find out a little more about your buck and his wether buddy (bloodlines, proven or not, price etc).  I am not sure how to connect directly via this forum without posting personal info.  But either a phone call or direct email would be great.  Thanks.  Judy

I don't loan out my bucks, or provide driveway or on-farm breeding, but I do have a 2011 buck and his wether buddy for sale. I'm in eastern New York State, a few miles from Bennington VT, if you are interested.

  • I didn't either... but they really aren't too bad, other than needing to be sure that any shared fence lines are REALLY secure. lol Those buggers are really serious about doing their jobs.

  • I hear you, makes sense.  I am still hoping that a buck will magically appear for service.....  Ugh...never really wanted to own a buck!  Oh well.

If you do, I highly recommend getting two. You need a companion for a buck anyway, so why not be feeding two mouths that can produce for your herd... at least that was my thinking. Two bucks aren't any more stinky than one. ;)

  • Going the route of AI seems like a lot of work and expense, I'd rather not go down that path right now.  I guess getting our own buck is an option.  I was hoping to avoid that but if I can't find a buck close by that might be the way we have to go.  We have had issues in the past with our does settling, and the driveway date thing has not worked well with us.  At the time we had a hobby urban farm.  They are thriving and doing really well out here in the pastures of rural western Massachusetts, so I am hoping that we won't have difficulty with them settling now.  Still, the driveway date thing does not seem like a great idea when you have to drive 1hr and 20 minutes.  I guess I need to look for a buck to join our herd.
