Goat Therapy?

Does anyone else take their goats to nursing homes? I took a couple kids yesterday and the residents seemed to LOVE it. I do have a few questions though, because this nursing home was on the reservation I wasn't bonded by most laws, but what are the rules/regulation on visiting goats in nursing homes? Are there any at all past them having their shots?

  • I used to be a social worker in a nursing home - I don't remember there being any special requirements. The biggest concern is usually that they don't pee/poop on the floor.
  • There isn't anything that a goat could give a human for which there is a vaccine, so there shouldn't be any kind of shots that they need -- unlike dogs, which can give rabies to a human. There are no vaccines mandated by law for goats. We haven't taken our goats to nursing homes, but my daughter does take them to church whenever we have bottle babies. They usually spend their time in the preschool or first/second grade classroom. The kids love them, and the parents love it, because once the kids know we have baby goats, they're trying to push their parents out the door on Sunday morning!

The Delta Society is a popular group for pet therapy. They might be able to give you info specific to health care institutions.
