Apparently we can't get the Selenium/E from Caprine Supply anymore. Anyone done the research to see what we can use to replace it? My bucket from CS does not say how much selenium was in it so it's very hard to compare. There are multiple brands of selenium/E crumbles for horses available but I have no idea what would be best and also they seem to cost a lot more than what we were getting. Ideas anyone?

  • So has anyone found a good selenium that is cost effective and the goats eat? If so please let me know.
  • I got the Ferrell selenium (it's called E/Selenium). It comes in 50# bags. Unfortunately my goats are NOT excited about it. I can't tell if they are eating much of it. I used an expensive brand like the one Marie mentioned above that comes in 5# tubs and my girls inhaled it ALL in a week. Way too expensive like Deborah said. Frustrating!

  • I tried that one, and my goats inhaled it within a few days, so that was an expensive mistake. There is another discussion on here about selenium, but I can't find it right now because I'm on my phone and traveling. Someone else found Fetrell selenium, which I'll be trying next. Should be waiting for me when I get home.

I have been following this post, and wondered what kind of free-choice selenium everyone is using.  I give the Selenium/Vit E gel monthly, and also COWP, but my does are not "taking", and we are wanting to switch to a free-choice selenium supplement, but don't know which one to try.  There are quite a few out there for horses, and I was considering this one, but am unsure if it would be a good one: https://www.jefferspet.com/products/selenium-vitamin-e

  • It's really not that great. Sweetlix Meat Maker has 50 ppm selenium. At first 90 ppm sounds great -- until you realize that the Redmond is about 90% salt, so the animals won't consume that much of the product. Sweetlix has only 10% salt, so ultimately the goats will get a lot more selenium from the Sweetlix. Keep in mind that you should never have more than one source of salt available as studies back in the 1990s showed that it totally confuses animals, and they don't control their intake of the different products properly.

Here's a resource for selenium that I found. It has other ingredients as well, but the selenium is 90ppm.

  • That's what I'm going to do.

  • No, I have no additional information. Would it hurt to try another brand even though we don't know how much selenium was in the brand we were using? I would think it would be similar but who knows. I have a little left but I need to order some soon.

  • I was hoping someone else would chime in and say they've tried a different supplement. Have you found any additional info on this since you originally posted?

  • I've ordered two of the different options and will let you know what I think after I've tried them for awhile.
