Food for bucks

I'm picking up my first goats next week, 3 bucks born and raised together (they're only 4 months old now so I'm not worried about them getting along) but I am wondering what would be the best feed to get for them? I live in rural northeast Ontario and may not have as many options as most others.

I do know about them needing low protein, I want to avoid any problems with urinary calculi but I don't know that much about hay and the different types of hay available.

Any suggestions?

  • Alfalfa and peanut hay are the two that I know are higher in protein. Both are legumes. If you stick with a grass hay, you should be fine. I don't know the names of grass hays in your area, but basically they look like grass and don't have leaves like the legume hays.

  • Bio-Ag is a great resource for minerals & supplements, available in an organic form for only a few dollars more.  Here is the link to their site http://bio-ag.com/livestock/goats/
