Finally Have Corid - Help with Dosing Please

My Corid just arrived, so much for speedy delivery huh, and I was looking at the bottle trying to figure out the math for dosing.  I want to be sure I get it right as the directions are a little confusing.

In short, as a drench the bottle says: Add 3 fl oz of Corid 9.6% Oral Solution to 1 pt of water and give 1 fl oz of drench solution for each 100 lb of animal body weight. Give daily for 5 days.

I know I'll be giving it full strength and do know the cc to oz ratio so with that info on hand if my doeling is around 20-25 pounds (I've yet to weigh her but think she's in this ball park area) would I give her between 5 and 6.25 ccs? Should I add something in with it to take the taste away or just go for it? Do I add a little more knowing some may be lost in the struggle of getting it down? I'm a little freaked out of using this stuff and giving her the wrong dose.  Guess this is where my newbie goat mama-ness shines through LOL.

  • Thanks for the undiluted dosing amount Deborah.  She is a stinker to get meds in to but it worked out better last night and I got the amount needed in.  Just a few more days to go and she should be good.  I'll be thankful when she is all cleared up, doing well, and adjusted to my program.  Not that there won't be any problems, but I feel like I'll be able to watch over better and know what is causing it easier. Does that make sense? Anyways, thank you again.   On a sidenote, I shared on my Facebook Farm page today your Homesteading conference workshop.  I'm hoping to go and perhaps if I'm lucky the day before too!! :D

  • We don't dilute it at all, and we give 1 cc per 25#. Basically when you dilute it, 3 ounces of the total 19 ounces is Corid, so we're reducing the dosage accordingly, so we're giving about 1/6 of the diluted dose.

When giving such a small amount, I don't have to worry about them spitting out any, assuming you put it in the back of their mouth.

  • What you said about diluting it less and then giving half the undiluted dosage makes sense.  I could mix that up and have it ready to go for her.

  • Yes, exactly Julia this is why I'm bit paranoid.  Your numbers are similar to mine - we were using the same conversion - though I posted too low for the higher dosage at 25#, not sure why I did that or what I was thinking there.  I'm just a tad frantic at this point I believe, but yes I don't know what to do about undiluted numbers. :-/ It seems as though it should be much less and especially when I look back at my first post about a doe with runny stool and Deborah mentioning how little she administered. Hopefully she'll be able to chime in about her experience with this.  I won't give it until I'm absolutely positive.  Good thing is Darla is doing just fine.  She hasn't had any diarrhea and while she still has some clumpy poops here and there she is eating, drinking, active, and otherwise doing well. Thanks for trying to help me with this. :)

  • I guess the thing to do would be not try to give it to her undiluted, but to dilute it less. So if you put the 3 oz of corid into only 1 cup of water (1/2 pint), then you could give her 1/2 the dosage of undiluted? Is that right? That would be 3 and a half ml instead of 7. Deborah has given it diluted less, hopefully she'll see this soon and can clarify. I'd be concerned too about the wrong dose.

  • Hmm that doesn't sound right. Based on your bottle directions, you would give her about 7ml of the diluted solution, right? (1 fl oz = 29.5 ml for 100 lbs divided by 4 (for your 25 lb doeling) = 7+ml  So if you are giving it to her undiluted you should be giving her much less than that. Not sure how to figure the undiluted solution!
