Fencing questions

Okay so we are looking at working on the fencing for our new girls this weekend and I was wondering what you all thought about our plan and if there is anything we can do to improve upon it. We are fencing in about 1/2 acre or so for our 3 girls (2 are pregnant moms). They have a 12x16 enclosed lean to "barn" on our new shed that will become my milking parlor. The fencing will come out from there so they can come and go into the barn when they choose. We are planning on using 4 inch wooden posts with telephone poles cut to length as corner posts. We want to run them 10 feet apart with the 5 ft tall 2x4 inch no climb horse fencing around the whole thing. Our neighbors dogs completely ignore electric fencing so we wanted a permanent physical barrier for them. My question is this...with the 10 ft post spacing will we need to run 2x4 top rails around the whole thing or would we be okay without them? We also need to keep them away from our fruit trees on the other side of one section. They are planted about 15 feet from where the fence will go.

Ha! He IS wonderful but he has a very bad habit of not telling me his plans until he gets ready to do something. I agree with what he does most of the time but he never wants to talk about what is going on in his brain until last minute. That and he can be a little wishy washy sometimes. Drives me nuts. Make a decision already man!

I'm gonna try to get some pics posted soon of the inside of he barn but he is going today to get ducks to put in it. We have a baby pool with a crack in it and the mallards will go in there until they are big enough to go in the chicken tractor.

  • awesome.  the drainage pipe/gutter will make a big difference.  On the not A+ side, I only have 1 gutter on an old barn - but it had a downspout, so I added a piece of 2" pvc to empty in a 55 gallon rain barrel, elevated, and added a faucet.  I attached a long hose and laid it out on the ground so all that water goes away from the barn.  My idea of rain barrels wasnt as wonderful as I thought it would be since it doesnt rain in Oregon in the summer months (July and August - there, I said it out loud) and I cut the top off instead of where I should've left it enclosed - so that doesnt help with the mosquito problem. -(  learning along the way.  :)  MotherEarthNews had an awesome article of how to on rain barrels.  GloryBee Honey Co. is near me, they have 55 gal. barrels for 15.00 - plus they have only had foodstuffs in them.

It sounds so awesome - if you have a clone of your husband - mail him. ^^

  • Well, he ordered a 10 ft gate and a 6 ft gate from TSC, they will be here Wednesday. The good news is that we got the other door done on the hay barn side and stained everything. We had to order another slide rail so we can't close the door on the hay side yet. We built a hay feeder too out of the scrap fencing and lumber we had from the barn construction. I'll try to get some pics later. We are going to have to put some gravel down first and put gutters on the roof cause the last heavy rain we got the dirt was wet about 3ft into the barn. We may put in a drainage pipe too to help stop some of the water coming in. Fence should be done by this weekend!!!
  • And actually, he probably is right - a 12 foot gate would be better.  I didnt want to spend any $$ and had a 12 footer that was rusted out on the bottom on one side, so I used the hack saw and cut it in half and painted it.  It looks great but all I can get through it is my riding lawn mower and wagon.  lol.

Yeah, he wants to order a 12ft gate for the bigger one and I am trying to convince him to set another post and get an 8 or 10 ft gate, plenty big for a truck or tractor to get through. He just wants everything to be perfect and our BIL lives next door and he and his wife are very peculiar about "the view" from their house, which just happens to be straight at our barn/pasture. BIL has already called his dad to "report" us and what we were doing. Then it ends up being a big ol fight and he just wants everything to look nice to avoid the situation. Gotta love family, right?
  • I could never understand how a neighbor - relative or not, feels they have the right to dictate what you do with your own property.  Boy, glad we are all grownup's LOL.

That reminds me, I went for a ride on my daughters bike this afternoon - just down the road there are some horse people on the corner who had the same sort of relation with their neighbor who has since lost his home, anyway, they really gave him a hard time over many things, but the last was him building a beautiful deck.  As I road a short distance down the street I was overcome with the essence of "buck", the people on the other side of them have ND's.  I laughed to myself thinking - now that must be poetic justice.  ^^  I admit - it almost smelled pleasant.  LOL.

  • $90.00??  that could be better used -) but, he probably wants everything to be "matched"..... 0)  gotta luv 'em
  • Yeah, we made a gate for the garden but it was slightly too big...turns out it fits the pasture "human" gate space perfectly but hubby wants to buy a metal gate. We are thinking of ordering them from TSC. I am going to try to convince him to just use what we have for the human gate and save us $90....he's so prissy.
