Feeding the goats

I just recently received a pregnant doe and then bought a sterile goat as a companion for her. I have been feeding them grain twice a day morning and late afternoon and alfalfa/orchard hay. I want to know if this is correct also they browse all day long not much now but they are eating leaves and what ever green there is left. Thanks Ellen from Georgia

  •    Thanks for the links Rachel, I registered for homesteading today and the goat spot really some good ideas will probably use the one with the rubber hoses on the horns.  Ellen

  • I linked you to some ideas for horns and keeping them out of fences in my first reply... in case you can't afford to re fence your pastures! :)
Here is an example of some horn protection tricks. http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/goat-horn... and http://www.thegoatspot.net/forum/f193/horn-guards-106463/index2.htm...
If you google keeping horned goats out of fencing, you'll find all sorts of ideas. This one is HILARIOUS!! (and totally practical too!) http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/livestock-forums/goats/496268-clas...
  •     Thanks Deborah will look it up to see what it looks like and how much it cost.

  • They make "goat fencing," which has 4" openings so they can't get their head in there.

  •             Hi Glenna:   That is a good idea about the 50 gallon PVC barrel as long as it isn't a permanent structure it can be in the pasture. I will call the gas company and make sure before I put it out in the pasture, I was also thinking of a 60 gallon rain barrel but will put it under the big pine tree for shade and brace it. Any suggestions on what to do to keep Kay's horns out of the fence? This picture was taken in mid Dec. when she was still pregnant about seven days later she had Romeo.2771476438?profile=originalay's horns out of the fence?

  • For shelters where you cannot build anything, a 50-gallon PVC barrel with one end cut out works for getting out of the rain.  I had some for mine to play with but they decided to use them for shelters as well.  Ages ago, pre-barn, I had one in their indoor area for climbing; the opening was on the far side.  I went out there and could *not* see any goats.  They had to be in there but no one in sight.  All three of them were in the barrel.  Baby (6-months old or so) was in the back, big sister (a year plus old) was next, and mom was most of the way in at the end.  I would have never guessed all three could have gotten inside that barrel!  The point is that nearly anything can be a shelter from the rain.

The first one I gave them outside, I braced to keep it from rolling then discovered the little one liked the challenge of staying on top of it while it moved.

  •                Patty: there is always something new for me to learn about goats, very wet and cold here today weather is for the ducks. So much rain have the goats in the back and the gate closed so they can stay in one of the two shelters, early they were just standing in the rain. So more hay under the lean to and back they went.2771476071?profile=original

  • Awe!  That clears things up a bit.  When I read "registered" I thought, "pure breed".   I thought of that as it would be now, though the 80's don't seem that "old", lol!  I guess for ND's, a lot has happened since then.  At any rate, Madeline is lovely, whatever she is. :)  I'm glad there's always something new to learn about goats!

  • Rachel maybe I have a better picture of Madeline, I don't think she is a silky either. This is a better picture of all three of the goats.2771476071?profile=original

Here is a picture Ellen shared with me on FB... as you can see, Madeline is not really all that shaggy. Especially for Winter. 2771475738?profile=RESIZE_480x480
