  • the coyote is mousing in the field behind us - however, I still heard him howling and barking at 4 a.m.  Unfortunately for me, but good for the goats - my field isnt entirely fenced - it's open on the house side.  So I have to babysit when I let them out -(

My dog has gotten where he doesnt even bark when it howls. -(

  • We have Great Pyrenees and although ours are very sweet tempered, and our male has several confirmed coyote kills, they do sometimes go after our poultry. It's odd which ones they'll go after though. We have 4 free-range meat turkeys that they've never bothered, but I had to rescue one of our guinea fowl from them this morning.
  • Coyotes will attack at any hour, not just during the night. I've seen one twice in the past week here in broad daylight.
  • We have acquired coyotes in the field behind us this summer.  We let off a gunshot one night and he didnt come back (howling anyway) for bout 4 nights.  We have a lab/collie mix that barks like crazy when it starts howling and barking, but even he is leary of going out into the field.  I have been keeping my 3 goats closed in the barn from bout 10 till 7 the next morning.  Should I be more concerned??  There were 2 - howling now I only hear 1
  • Thanks for the info. Good to know about the G.P.'s they were on my list of breeds to research. I have lots of poultry so not a good choice. I want dogs that will also pull carts so I'm leaning toward the Greater Swiss Mountain dog or the A.S. like you have. It's so difficult to choose the right breed.
  • We have an Anatolian shepherd. The main reason we got him was because I'd heard they're good with poultry. We had a couple of Great Pyrenees originally, and they killed too many chickens. I know people who keep their GPs tied because they are so bad about killing chickens. It surprises me that people keep breeding dogs like that. Our LGD is very good against coyotes, and I've heard they're also good against mountain lions and bears, but we don't have any experience with that. He weighs 120 pounds.
