False Pregnancy in Older Doe??

Well I think I have one of those "False Pregnancy" things going on with my 10 year old doe. She has not been around any bucks except the babies before weaning from their mother... and that was back in July.

Yesterday I noticed (giving shots) that she has a small udder (not normal looking for her). She has always been large around the middle due to over breeding from her last owner (Perm-Grand).. So I can't tell if she is wider than normal.. She always looks pregnant.

I have read what I could online and saw that there are other horrid things that could be going on. Any suggestions on what I should keep my eyes out for? (Reminder: No "goat" vet in town.. closest goat expert is 4 hrs away).

Thanks guys!!

  • I know.. I always get the weird stuff..  :o)

I called my goat expert friend freaking out thinking she somehow got pregnant. She laughed and said it’s more likely at her (goat) age she is going through hormone changes.. and is doing a “false pregnancy”. I just hope that there is nothing else that might be wrong with her.. She is eating fine.. is a bit more talkative than normal.. and is wanting attention.

If it was a real pregnancy we would not see an udder at.. what 7 or 8 weeks??  Just worried about my old girl. Thanks!!

Well, I have heard it is possible at 9 weeks but I think that is really pushing it though. Just not real likely. This is weird to say the least, but it does happen.

  • I weaned them at 9 weeks (DOB: May 17).. Moved them July 20th into a pen on the other side of the barn.

How old were the "babies" before they were weaned from their mother? When were they born would be a better question, and when were they removed from the pen?

  • Oh.. We have had her for about 4 years now.. and have never tried breeding her.. she was purchased as a companion only. This is also the first time in the 4 years that her udder has looked like this.
