Do Nigerians lose teeth???

I have a 1 and a 1/2 year old doe. Her name is Chelsea. She was one of my very first Nigerians, so she is spoiled rotten!! When I was cuddling with her, I noticed that she was missing an entire tooth. I was wondering if they can lose teeth and grow new ones? Do goats just wear through the teeth and that's the end of that tooth? Thanks

  • Just my two cents worth...  I noticed one of my nigies lost a bottom tooth, and it grew the big one in.

  • That's a great pic, Patty! It's pretty much what Goat Medicine explains, although they fail to mention the baby teeth are falling out as the other teeth are growing in. Thanks to everyone who gave much better answers than my original post on this topic.

  • Here's a chart that shows when the adult teeth grow in.  It looks like they finish getting their adult teeth around age 2.5 to 3.  I'm not sure where this came from, so I can't vouch for it totally without looking into it more, which I don't have time for now.  Hope it helps. :)goatTOOTHchart.jpg?width=457

  • Interesting... I think!! LOL  Thanks Laura!!

  • They do lose there teeth during there yearling year and it can be shocking if your not sure. Also older does can actually absorb there teeth when their pregnant if they are lacking in vitmians and minerals.
  • I am absolutely positive that she had that tooth. I've had her for over a year and I would have noticed if she hadn't had that tooth. But I called a friend and she said that up until they  are 3-5 years old, they are losing their baby teeth.

  • No, they don't continue to regrow teeth like sharks do. Are you sure she actually lost it? In other words, did she have it to begin with? Goats grow teeth gradually for the first few years, and sometimes they fail to grow one or two at all.
