Disbudding help

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking for someone in/near the Wichita, KS area who has experience disbudding these tiny little babies?  Found a "nearby" vet who will do it but I'd rather have someone who regularly does ND's.  I will pay!!  Thanks :)

  • My first time was after watching videos on here and on youtube and it was two bucklings 6 days old. They both ended up with good sized scurs... here's what I learned from it:

    1) Do it in the daylight so you can SEE really well.

    2) Have someone COUNT with you because I counted way too fast as I was so afraid of going too long. I do 5 seconds and stop to look. More if needed. I would NOT do 10 seconds as some suggest!

    3) Take your time and make sure you see a nice coppery ring all the way around the bud. If some areas are whitish, hit them again. Some people don't, but knock the horn bud off after burning and then burn the bud too really well (didn't do that).

    4) Some people don't but I spray an antiseptic spray on it like Allushield. Seems to cool it faster and sealing it makes ME feel better.

It's terrifying the first time but it's over quickly and does get easier (even though I'm almost sick to my stomach before I do it!). This year I was relieved at how perfect they looked and how fast the kids got over it.

  • There is a good video shared here about disbduding. It might help you feel confident. Good luck to you! I was lucky enough to have someone that could come help me my first time.
