Disbudding

I am scared to death to disbud my babies! I had 2 kids last spring (my first ones ever) and enlisted the help of a friend who raises Boer goats to help me disbud. My buck is polled. My friend didn't think he felt any points so we decided to wait. After a week had passed, it was obvious that they were both horned but it was too late. Any advice for newbies to disbudding? I could use any and all advice because I would really like to breed my does this fall.

  • I'd suggest getting someone knowledgeable to disbud the goats for you so you can watch. The boer breeder doesn't sound like the best choice. Most people don't disbud boers, so perhaps he didn't have much experience. If you felt absolutely nothing, then waiting a week should not have been a problem for disbudding. They don't grow that fast. Our first year we had a vet do it and learned from him. Perhaps the person who sold you the goats would let you watch the disbud? I actually offer to disbud the first kids born to people who buy goats from us.

  • Hi Paula,  There is a new group of Facebook of people who are experimenting with using clove oil to disbud.  I am VERY interested in learning more about it!  The group is called "Clove Oil disbudding in goats"
