Difficult Milkers

My doe who is a first freshner is giving me a hard time when milking.  At first she was really good and didn't mind being milked but now she attempts to sit down when I try and milk her.  I've got her locked into the milking stand but she still manages to sit down which makes milking very hard.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get her to behave?

  • ditto - I usually stick my elbow under her to block the ability to lay down!  LOL  if she does I get up so she thinks ah! it worked and then I clean her and dry her again - sit back down and tell her ok, now we have to start all over - then being so smart - she realized when I sat back down that meant I was going to milk again - so down she went again - so we started over again - I was just as persistant about getting the milk as she was about not wanting me to have it! LOL - it was frustrating - but I WON!  yay!
  • My FF tried to do that the first couple of times on the stand and my son was out there with me.  He just held her up high enough for me to milk so her laying down was pointless for her.  She has not tried it since then.  I think she realized she can't win by doing that.  =) Her behavior has been very  nice since then.
  • I totally agree with Julia. Patience and persistence pay.
  • First dont give up. One of my first freshner does last year started the same thing. I was lucky enough to have my husband come out and hold her up while I milk. I think when she got the point that sitting down was not working she stop and has become my best milker with the best manners on the milk stand. Good Luck
