Copper Bolus Dosage

The last time I bolused my herd I gave my bucks and adult does 4g copper, and junior does got 2g copper. Everything I have read says that even adult Nigerians need 2g. So will it hurt my adult does if they got 4g? Should I give the 2g to everyone next time? Or just keep it at 4g? Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • I can't speak for others but I know some people in my area weigh their goats and do it by weight. I had my vet help me decide - we do 4grams for all adults and yearlings and 2g for kids.  Works well and I've only seen positive results.

  • I have always used 1 gram per 20 pounds, so my adults get 4 grams. That was based on experience of breeders and research studies. Look at your goats and listen to them. Did they look better after bolusing? One size does not fit all. It depends on your goats' level of deficiency and the copper antagonists on your farm.
