I keep thinking about Deborah describing the difference to us between fat/preg. .

I realize that today is only July 1st and my goat who was pasture bred & due in June, but I also keep thinking of how huge she was when I saw her on March the 3rd. That means that it has been 4 months since I saw her looking VERY big. Even if she kidded today that would mean she was only one month pregnant. She should not have been that big.

Therefore, I can't seem to get it out of my mind as to if she was just really fat and is getting fatter. Or was she just really fat then and is now very fat and very pregnant! Do goats ever get so fat that they look like this? I want to know based on her SHAPE does she even look pregnant?

I just made this pic.- Don't know if it is good enough to tell-not quite the look I was aiming for if you need it more from the top or side or whatever let me know.

This is really driving me crazy. Hubby swears she is pregnant, but if she isn't he would freak after paying that for her suppose to be having the babies that we are expecting. We would never have just spent that on her in this condition without babies!

  • Yes Deborah good advice.  I document everything about my girls and what they do and when they breed etc etc.

  • Congratulations! This scenario is a lot more rare than the other one, but it happens. I've been surprised twice by goats that came back into heat even though they were pregnant. That's why I always write down every day that they were bred and pay attention to them when the first due date gets close.

    WOW!
Biopryn lab just called me. My goat that I mentioned before that went into heat 6 days after I had her with the buck is pregnant!!!
I bred her with my buck November 5th, then transported her to my other house, two hours away from my boys. Then on the 9th, she went into heat again. Not wanting to go back to my buck two hours away, I figured I would breed her this month. But she never went into heat when I expected her to.
I've never heard this happen before! I'm excited for goat babies now!!!
  • Fantastic!! Congrats Phebe...that is way awesome.   I keep thinking my Maya is pg, but again teeter tottering back and forth .... So I'm just gonna keep an eye on her.  Found the secret to my buckskin doe to get her to come (she is good anyway) I talk in a high pitch voice like a baby and her ears go up and she comes right to me... LOL   Just gotta love these girls.

That makes me think Maya maybe could be pg as she was penetrated 2x on Sept 1 and didn't show interest in bucks and still doesn't...but her vulva was red and slit like heat....  she did have a discharge a few days ago, go figure....this is 3 months later...these goats have their own way!

Precious my other doe was successfully bred on Nov 30 3x  and again on Dec 1  4x.    She then went into heat again Dec 6 and was successfully bred again 6 times....  I couldn't believe it.  I followed Deborah's advice check 6 days later to make sure it wasn't a false heat..ergo the Dec 6 breeding again.but she was in standing heat all three days she was bred.

  • That's good to know Deborah.  I found pics of Maya last year bed and unbred and compared her vulva to these I posted here.  I don't think she is pregnant, unless a pregnant goat can go into heat while being pregnant. I base that on her vulva being a RED slit.  Those pics were dec 7 so I'll be watching at 20 days to see if she goes in heat again and separate her from the other girls and see what happens.  If she were bred end of dec. would have May babies.

  • There is a milk test that just became available through Dairy One. It's been available for cows for more than a year, and I just got a letter from them a couple of weeks ago saying that it is now available for goats too. Won't help with a first freshener, but it's a good option for does in milk.

  • Phebe,

That's very cool.  My friends have never been around goats and I can't trust them to follow instructions.  LOL  My other female friend is almost 70 years old and I don't think that she has the strength to hold her.  She is not as big as a boer or la mancha but in between size of large nigie and boer.

  • Trish,
I did have my friend come over and help me hold her still. She squirmed more when I shaved her neck then when I poked her.
I have one of those friends that everyone should have! She enjoys doing the not so cool stuff with me (drawing blood, butchering roosters, planting my garden) we have never gone shopping together for shoes and purses! We wear work boots, and don't worry about how we look :-)
  • Hi Phebe,

I probably would attempt it, but I don't have anyone to hold her still. I've mastered banding and disbudding so if I had help I would try.  She is the Queen and a real "B" and won't hold still with horns taboot.   I would have to have someone hold her tight. If she was registered than I would invest, but she isn't.   I wish someone would make a urine test for goats, that would be Soooooooooo simple  LOL.   Lets get a petition going to a company to make it happen  LOL

  • Deborah, I've been a nurse for 10 years. Luckily I specialize in quadriplegics on ventilators. They couldn't feel it if I missed multiple times trying to draw their blood ;-) practicing on them helped a lot.

Trish, I know blood pregnancy testing isn't for everyone, but between the supplies, and the testing fee it was under $10. I paid more then that for my own test at the local drug store for my human babies. Now I just have to wait for the results. I'm so impatient.
